Anybody know if any of the top players are left-handed? I think Joel Benjamin is, but I don't know of any others.

i'd be surprised if not all the top players are left handed, has it's been proven that left handed people have a higher I.Q than right handed. I'm left handed by the way!

That makes three of us! I don't think Kasparov is a lefty-I've seen pictures of him and he writes with his right hand. By the way,      jona004, Bobby Fischer has an IQ of around 160+ and he is right-handed.

My family must be a statistical anomaly then, because there are six people in my family with IQs in the range of 150 to 170, and all of them are right-handed. :)

Occupations: NASA engineer, US Navy engineer (civilian), IBM computer scientist, Architect, Ford car dealership parts manager/radio DJ, and Graphic artist/Windows software developer (me).

None of them play Chess except for me... and I am not particularly good at Chess myself :) but maybe if I actually study I'll be "OK". Smile

It's just a number, Jay :) And it's a number that's really overrated. It comes from a test we all took as a child, and can't really be used in accurately comparing how "smart" two people may end up in their adult lives. It's more like a rough indicator of what someone could accomplish with their mental abilities if they use them to their fullest extent. Some guy with an IQ of 125 could seem (and truly be) more intelligent than someone with a 160 IQ if the latter person is lazy and doesn't apply himself.

One of my family members has an IQ of 169, and he worked in the back room of a small Ford dealership cataloging parts for much of his adult life.

I can't say I have anywhere near the mental abilities of Fischer (especially as far as Chess is concerned), but technically my IQ is about the same as his. He sure was a "smarter" guy than me in almost every way... it's all about how you apply yourself. There are also plenty of people with lower IQs that are more "intelligent" than me. All my IQ of 170 means is that I can be pretty good at absorbing new concepts and ideas, solving problems, and just learning things in general (and I think it gives me a love of learning). That said, I am certainly no rocket scientist. In fact, I know very little about the subject. :)

I have to say, it really seems to me like you've been quite successful Jay, so who cares about some silly number anyway? :)

Now, what I want to see is some evidence that you left-handers are supposed to have higher IQs (in general)...

I don't really know what you mean, Sarah. From what I've seen, you're really one of the most intelligent people I've met (and apparently I've met many of them). Maybe your IQ wasn't tested to be extraordinarily high, but it seems like you really make incredibly good use of your mental capabilities. Smile

Well of course they're a right handed people with high IQ's. The test was done over thousands of people. The result was close anyway 51/49%. I dont know if Kasparovs left handed though. Perhaps people are getting confused with that excellent joke in one of the other forums. Alicia's i think?

IQ tests aren't a very good measure of intelligence, someone can improve at them quickly by just repeatedly taking them. You get to see what questions are looking for as an answer (for example the pattern spotting questions: you do thirty of them and you quickly get good at them).

My IQ is at least in the double digits, in fact, my IQ may have 2 digits. Be jealous.
