* Ivanchuk

* Short

* Bent Larsen (well, he was the best player according to his own opinion, very interesting character by the way)

All the challengers who finished equal with the champion and didn't get the title because of that stupid rule that says that the champion keeps the title in case of a tie deserve to be in that list: Schlechter, Bronstein, Leko.

The best player in the Universe, according to his own opinion, will always be Nimzovitch.

Morphy!

Morphy was world champion, as the title existed at that time - universal recognition.

So what other players were World Champions before Steinitz?

I'm no fan of the idea to declare players World Champions before the World Championship was invented. Then who was World Champion, when they were and how they lost the title will all be based mainly on wishful thinking. So I stick to the official World Champions. Oh, and I'm no fan of ranking Gelfand as greater than Carlsen either :-)

Possibly Adolf Anderssen who won the 1st international tournament.

If I were to vote for only one: Rubinstein

He never became World Champion because of tremendous "entrance fee" requested by Lasker for his opponents.

If more types are permitted, I also add Keres, Bronstein and Nimzowitsch

Morphy was never a world champion. What planet was this? I'm going to write a blog about all the players who played in world chamiopship matches, but never won the crown. I think that would be a good blog to read.

I say Korchnoi!!!

I thought Staunton won the first international tournament.

Staunton organized it,  but was knocked out by Anderssen 4-1.

Morphy was never what is now considered an official world champion. This is because the concept of world champion hadn't even been developed at that time (for logical reasons). He was, however, considered universally the best chess player in the world at that time which is tantamount to being the world champion.  Steinitz, the first "official" world champion was generally, though not universally, considered the best player in the world at the time he attained that status.  What made him "world champion" was no officially sanctioned contest - since there was no organization or authority to officially sanction anything of the sort - but the simple expediency of him and Zukertort agreeing that their match would be for the world championship and getting the press behind them.  "Official" is a pretty shaky term for some of us other-worldly beings.
