New rules

We all know that it is a matter of time until the computer will crack our beautiful game, and it will be a matter of installing a small piece of software on your laptop in order to win or draw every game!

So it is time to  take our precautions not to let this happen !

In other sports (eg volleyall) the rules of the game have been changed numerous times in order to keep the game interesting when circumstances change, for instance a growing medium length of the human race.

I propose to start a contest here of proposals for rule changes which will make it harder, if not impossible for the computer to kill our game.

Maybe in the end chess.com will honor the winner of the contest by installing a possibilty to play on their site according to the new rule(s) ??????????

I will start by proposing a few possibilities here:

 - ALLOW EACH PLAYER TO MOVE TWICE ON ONE OCCASION DURING THE GAME. HE IS FREE TO CHOSE THE MOMENT TO DO SO.

- ALLOW PLAYERS TO TAKE THEIR OWN PIECES. SO IF YOUR OWN PAWN IS BLOCKING YOUR PLAY, JUST TAKE IT AWAY JUST LIKE YOU WOULD DO WITH YOUR OPPONENT'S PAWN

WHO'S NEXT ?????????

Even if computers solve chess which I doubt it will make little difference to us, computers are so strong now anyway what do you think we will do memorise every line

When automobile were invented, did it killed track & field or marathon?

Hyannis

We all know in the game of chess, that the most powerful piece is the Queen. However, she is restricted in moving diagonally and/or moving along the rank and file of the board as long as no piece is in the way for her to be captured or blocked in.

My proposal is for the Queen to ba able to include the Knights move as well. It would enable the Queen to escape from those nasty corners and/or infiltrate the enemies line of defence without compromising your hard earned strategic play.

No other changes are necessary!!!

Good idea Hyannis ! Would be interesting to play a couple of games like that and see what it brings!

It made me think of a different one:

Since the Queen already is so strong, why not boost the knight a bit instead. To me it is the most intriguing piece on the board, not letting itself be caged with it's stubborn jumps over other pieces. The only thing that cages him are the boundaries of the 64 squares.

SO WHY NOT ALOOW THE KNIGHT TO JUMP OVER THESE BOUNDARIES, AND GO BACK AND FORTH TO THE VIRTUAL SQUARES BESIDE THE BOARD??

It would solve the problem of the awkward posision of a knight on the sides or even in the corner of the board.

And it would finally put an end to the discussion about which is stronger, Bishop or Knight.

"In Chess, he is allowed to move his opponent's queen."

"He is, THE MOST INTERESTING MAN IN THE WORLD."

Stay thirsty, my friends.

It didn't posporov, although there have been examples of athletes trying to win a marathon by taking the bus.

The problem of cheating in (online) chess is much bigger tho. So if a minor change in rules could make all the available computer software worthless, it would at least be good for those of us who hate being beaten by a computer when they think they are playing against a person.

planeden

so, is this about computers solving chess or cheaters using computers?

Blightyman

With all this talk about changing rules, people using computers to cheat.

I'm not surprised that Fischer quit!

Mitsurugi

Has anyone mentioned chess-boxing yet?  And maybe give each player a second queen.

planeden

chess boxing?  like pawns are jabs, bishops are crosses, and knights are hooks?  wtf?

Mitsurugi

Sadly not.  Chess boxing = 5 minutes of chess, then 5 minutes of boxing, then 5 minutes of chess and so on.  Knockout, stoppage or checkmate wins.

Mitsurugi

Just realised we're talking about stopping computer domination.  Oh well.  That'll halt deep blue in its tracks.

sign me up, i am pretty sure i can survive the first five minute chess round.  however, to be fair, shoudln't it be a coin flip to see if the first round is chess or boxing?

Gil-Gandel

Less violent than chess boxing is "round the houses" chess: After you move, you run around the house. If your opponent hasn't moved by the time you get back, it's your move again.

planeden

so the rich have a harder game with their big houses?

Henster97

I don't think these changes should be made to normal chess but there could be a new type of chess with these rules. There are already lots of interesting chess games with different rules. My chess application on my computer lets me play Regular,Crazyhouse,Suicide and losers chess for example.
