Chess ratings NEW members

It may also be worth mentioning that the possibility to choose one's initial rating (within certain bounds) is not unique to Chess.com. I think that for example ICC also has that. It's certainly common practice among different Go servers where even fast games typically last longer than in Chess.

Also, in otb tournaments it's possible for organisers to use an estimate for the initial rating of a new player if there's some reason to believe she is significantly stronger than your average beginner.

New members being able to 'declare ' their own rating seems odd to me.Why any need to change the old system which worked perfectly well.

I suppose it doesn't make much difference in blizt or bullet since the ratings will find their "true value" quickly but in correspondece chess where games take months it's different. It used to be the case that when an experienced otb player joins he will for a long time face mostly much weaker opponents which can be quite frustrating for all parties involved.

I have found at more than a dozen correspondence sites that when I first join, I have to win all or most of my games for several months before I find my level at that site and get good quality competition.

If I could self-declare as "above average", it would shorten this orientation period. In my experience, one other site asked me to estimate my level when I joined: ChessWorld.net. I am still playing there twelve years later.

I'm wondering about this too... most players seem to start out at 1200 (including me), but a couple start at 800 and a couple at 1800. Interestingly I haven't seen other values such as 1000, 1400, or 1600.

I saw 921...for me

Apparently new players who start in version 3 get to choose their rating

You can select the number.

VintagePawn

You can select the category, which assigns a rating.

For example (may not be the actual choices):

Beginner -- 800

Expert - 1800

Bilbo21

Is anyone really an expert in chess? Certainly not 1800s imo

AIM-AceMove

I aim to be one in near future. And there are plenty of players with above 2000 ratings here, both online and OTB, but for true word expert, one must be above 2200 at least.

DoctorStrange

Expert is 1800+ a master is maybe 2000.

VintagePawn

I don't recall what the top level is called, just that it is 1800. If it asked the question before creating the account I would check grin.png

But really, it is just a way for players to give an estimate at how strong they think they are. The rating system will take care of the rest

DoctorStrange

I would definitely choose 1400 0r 1800

DoctorStrange

correct

There is a new update... When u make a new account there will be a question- What level of a chess player are you?

New-800

Beginner-1000

Intermediate-1200

Advanced-1500

Expert-1800

MSC157

I'd say I'm intermediate, but I'm no way 1200. Not fond of this idea...
