Debate: What to call "Online Chess"...

Sort:
Ziryab

Erik needs to explain why familiar terms that everyone understands are unacceptable and call for a vote on names that meet his criteria.

Sooner- what I was saying is that the revenue question is from the realm of executive decisions. I agree with your point but feel that it kinda dilutes the issue.

As for the new vote, perhaps we should not confuse democracy (i.e. people's rule) with democratic procedures (which differ by time and region- see Citizens United for example).

Sooner

valyar, the essence of democracy and democratic procedures are not separable, regardless of time or place.

rigamagician

For "online chess," I like the old standbys: "correspondence chess," "turn-based chess" or "server chess."

What chess.com calls "live chess" is usually called "blitz."

If "vote chess" were renamed "consultation chess," "team chess" or "conference chess," perhaps people would be more likely to read each other's comments, and actually discuss the move to be made.

valyar

Sooner- I disagree. If you live in different cultures and respect your neighbors you come to realize that some things in the instruction manual are wrong.

Indeed, didn't one of your countrymen say (if effect)--that it's not who casts the votes, but rather, who counts the votes that really matters.

At least he's not preserved under glass anymore, after 1961.

Sooner

valyar, what manual? I didn't know there was one. Democracy is democracy no matter the time and place.

I did it in a femtosecond.

Sorry.  You must have flunked "Social Science," big time.  Laughing

Daily Chess, Anytime Chess, and Calendar Chess all seem to convey the same clear idea of using a least a day, or more, to move.

Doesn't 'Daily Chess' imply that only one move is made every day?

Or that to move daily is necessary.

Sooner

kborg, no I never flunked any courses; but I've never heard of any manual for democracy. Why don't you tell me about it?

Except anytime chess doesn't really. The problem with "online" chess is that it doesn't distinguish from any other type of chess here since it's all online. Anytime has that same problem.

Another problem is that you really don't have to use at least a day. I've play a few games where the page will reload when they make a move, so it's nearly the same as live chess at that point. This is useful for the first few moves.

Plus with Conditional Moves allowed, I've been able to get a person to resign several moves ahead, since it was obvious what they would do for each move.

I still find it hard to see how people think there are great similarities between this and correspondence chess of yester-year which merely sent the intended move to each person and nothing else. (Plus the name is probably too long to fit in the current spot for it. :)
