Upcoming Changes to Chess.com Memberships

In the next few weeks we will be making some changes to Chess.com Premium Memberships. Why will we make these changes? Two reasons: #1, it is too confusing (silver is same as gold but not, diamond is lifetime platinum, chess mentor is separate, etc); #2, we think we can offer more value for less money and let more people enjoy more tools on Chess.com.

Here are the essential changes:

  • We have simplified memberships to 3 plans: Gold, Platinum, and Diamond
  • The price for gold yearly and monthly will not change (still $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year)
  • These 3 new membership levels are all available with monthly or annual payments (gold monthly, gold yearly, platinum monthly, platinum yearly, diamond monthly, diamond yearly)
  • Gold (and former silver) members will get a slightly limited # of tactics trainer problems per 24 hour period [though current Gold Members will keep their unlimited tactics until the end of their current membership]
  • We have changed the Platinum membership to be much cheaper (exact price not final), though it does not include a gift gold membership or T-shirt (which will later be available as a separate purchase for $19)
  • There are no more separate Chess Mentor subscriptions - Chess Mentor is included in the new Diamond Membership
  • Diamond will no longer be a Lifetime membership
  • Diamond memberships will be roughly the same price as current Chess Mentor subscriptions ($12.99 a month, $99 a year), but will include all Platinum benefits!

Overall we believe we are offering a better membership experience for everyone. The new lower prices for Platinum and Diamond will allow Chess.com members to enjoy more features for less money, including Chess Mentor!

All accounts will be automatically and seamlessly transitioned. Nobody will lose any money or value - memberships will be extended and adjusted so that you get full value for the remaining account credit you have.

We have spent weeks preparing this and hopefully everything will go smoothly :D

In addition to the membership changes, we have 2 HUGE new features that are coming out before the new year - even more value for your money! Seriously, Chess.com has 10x any other site, and for a lower price!

I'm happy to answer questions :)

what will happen to those who already bought a lifetime membership?

um, does this mean that as a gold a member, we are now limited to an X amount of tactic problems within tactic's trainer? What does this mean for Platnium do they have unlimited? If so will we be able to update from gold to platnium or even diamond? Also with the diamond membership do we get a T shirt i really want one of those :) and a gift membership?

I know a lot of questions but i am so curious. :)

i tried to answer all of this above already, but i guess not. :D

- yes, there will be a slight limitation on tactics for gold (won't affect most people, only the heaviest users)

- platinum and diamond will have unlimited tactics.

- you will be able to upgrade and have your unused membership credit (the prorated amount of unused membership time) applied to your upgrade.

- you will be able to order a T-shirt seperately

- you will be able to still order gift memberships seperately

Oh, well i guess i have to put a chess.com T shirt on my chrissy list. :D. So what is the main advanatage of being a diamond member if it isn't a life time membership? Because from my understanding of what you wrote their doesn't really seem to be any major difference between the platnium and diamond members.

Also what will happen to current diamond members? Will they retain their life membership or will they be forced to pay more money after the 5 year period?

once again, happy to re-answer questions answered above :)

- difference between platinum and diamond is unlimited chess mentor access
- current diamond keep their lifetime diamond

Good news, Erik.  The "gift" memberships aren't really a benefit to platinum members, though they may well be to our friends, and I had been wondering what I was going to do with a growing stock of chess.com t-shirts.

FYI the reason I upgraded from gold to platinum (and will continue to buy platinum membership) was the opportunity to play in unlimited tournaments.

Far out... I only just joined and these changes will make me want to reassess which one I want.

Can you create a comparison chart like this for the new plans please?

there will be a new Membership page that will have all of this information when we change over.

Part of me is actually tempted to drop the $500 on this.  However, the the kids have the wife on edge at the moment and there is no way in the world I'll drop this much without a long conversatin with her.  While you may not be able to say exactly how long things may be in a limbo state between the two plans...would it be safe to say I have a day or two to work this out?

(I'm thinking of maybe a dinner, some flowers and the like...)

This will not happen before Dec 15th.

Thank you...that gives me time to think it all over.  Very kind.

Can you please clarify, Erik - is it "All accounts will be automatically and seamlessly transitioned. Nobody will lose any money or value - memberships will be extended and adjusted so that you get full value for the remaining account credit you have".

Or - - yes, there will be a slight limitation on tactics for gold (won't affect most people, only the heaviest users)

These pastes from your posts above.

Thanks

"All accounts will be automatically and seamlessly transitioned." So I'm guessing the $80 I paid for my membership... it will be reduced for the next year's payment I will make and the price I already paid won't be changed or refunded... correct? Anywho, I am super happy there are new updates coming! Happy Holidays, best of luck to the Chess.com staff.

Of the $80 you paid, you have received $50 of the value ($20 shirt, $30 gift membership) up front, so your Platinum membership renewal date (or end date) will not change from what it currently is. But next year you will pay a lot less (and not receive a shirt or gift membership, which will be available seperately).

Okay, as a Gold Member, I'm glad we now get computer analysis of games. That's a great feature! But how, as current Gold Members, will we not lose any money or value? One of the reasons why I bought the Gold is because it promised unlimited use of the Tactics Trainer. The no ads is nice. I don't really use my stats page and I don't play in very many tournaments, so it seems like if I lose my privilege of unlimited tactical puzzles I will lose a lot of value!! I've been trying to do 25-50 problems/day in an attempt to try and do like 500-1000 in one day if possible. Do we gain anything with the new Gold changes, or do we just lose stuff?

Saccadic

Would you be able to let us know the number of tactics per 24 hours that Gold members have access?

earltony15

chess.com rocks

Abarai

what about silvers?

Hakuoh

Yea I liked the unlimited tactics trainer. One of the main reason I upgraded in the first place. Can gold still keep unlimited tactics trainer?
