You Can't Win

There's much to be said for playing opponents who don't chat, and who don't have a photo or even an image, and who have a fairly anonymous username. If the game reaches a point where you have to be ruthless and crush them into the ground - at least they are just a cypher.

By contrast, if you have established a rapport, and they have told you about their sick puppy, and their adorable child - and perhaps their picture shows Daddy (or Mummy) with the aforementioned little darling clasped to his/her bosom, are you really going to have the heart to finish them off? And even if you do, can you avoid the feelings of guilt afterwards, realising that the youngsters may now go hungry to bed?

LOL,

The way I figure it, I may as well be the one to push them over the edge as opposed to someone else.

It's my service to humanity, if you feel guilty about getting rid of them, give them to me and I'll do the dirty for you!

they play to get away perhaps, so why not play against them. to let them win would make them more worse off if you ask me. if somone didnt want to get crushed they would not play so go ahead and crush them.

Sorry, but I'm a chess player--whomever is across the board from me is my opponent, and I consider it my duty to crush them if I can.  Cute, to me, only applies to the quality of the combination that wins (or saves) a game.  And since no one has ever lost sleep over crushing me (and I did look cuter a number of years ago), I don't lose sleep over beating someone--unless it's a cute brilliancy, in which case I'll lose sleep by playing it over in my head all night!  And guilt is for O.J. Simpson.

Presumably you mean a dummy account ON ANOTHER SITE where multiple accounts are permitted under the site rules.

Same thing for me. i mean, i'm still very young, and chess aren't always considered as high as i would want in my high school.

I was recently participant in a round-robin match between twinned towns: Hastings (England) Vs Bethune (France). The Hastings team was considerably stronger, turning up with eight 2000+ Fide players, resulting in me playing a well behaved and very sweet ten year old French girl. I crushed her quickly and efficiently without a second's thought for her age and inexperience. Afterwards, one of the other home players asked me how I'd done against the little girl. I told him that I had crushed her, whereupon he let out a gasp of disappointment. This got me thinking...were some of the other players going easy on her? was I the only meanie? after all, most of the rest are fathers. I consulted the results cross table to discover she had lost every game! It wasn't just me then....
