This was a remarkably strategic game.  The middle game set the pace.  What im wondering from others here most specifically are thoughts of the pawn at 8f5 moving down to protect the knight.   Is the temporary protection blacks knight gains worth the risk of weakening the king side later on?

I don't think f5 is good in the position where white can attack the N with his own f-pawn.  This idea of lodging a N in supported by the f- and d-pawns is something I have seen in Pillsbury's games playing the Queen's Gambit as white.  He used it to devestating effect at times.  I don't know if it is seen much now.  I'll find an example in a minute but one more comment.  I think you could have played 30. Rxg7 because Kxg7 allows white to fork the black rook and king.  Nice game.  Ok here's a Pillsbury game.
