I wouldn't let it bother me.  Like wine, anonymity brings out most folks' true colors.

There is a usual formula for getting around safely.

What to Avoid:

IQ Threads - Usually started by people that think they are intelligent and so are entitled to be good at chess; When they realize this is not the case they make these threads to troll and make themselves feel better. Ops are constantly bragging about an alleged high IQ and chess ratings over and over again. The home page of the user often includes bragging of chess skills and other nonsense. The OP always insults others that do not agree with their opinions. Unless you're there to spam, stay away. They are the chess nerd personified. Resign Threads - Typically started by low rated players that think that others should be forced to give up when they want them to. They completly ignore the right of the player to continue and constantly avoid any mention of it. Unless you want to poke fun avoid, avoid avoid; Bragging Threads - Don't think I need to elaborate there; Analysis Threads with Constant Negative Input From OP - The reason analysis is rare is because most of the time the OP asking for help disagrees with everything the better players contribute. You then wonder why the douchebag opted to make the thread at all. It doesn't take long to notice and I'm sure others have figured it out... Waffle Threads - Pancakes are better and you know this Daily Puzzle - Solve the puzzle and move on. Nothing to see here... Math Threads - Usually harmless but they can get out of hand... 1.e4 or 1.d4 - You've been warned. Threads Asking Input From A Certain Rating Class - They are full of themselves and often argue with any differing opinions. Avoid at all costs; This includes "puzzles" for certain rating classes. If a puzzle is good people will notice on their own. Anything else is probably some attention whore. Fischer Threads - You won't get past page 1 without a flame war starting.  Cheating Threads - You won't get past page 1 without a flame war starting. Waffle Threads - Pay attention. Pancakes are better.

13. Threads about how people behave. Usually the OP is "passively aggressive" and manipulative.

But the fact is, people wouldn't treat each other like this (despicable) in real life; not like people do it to each other online.

It's true: it's a damn shame, but people just aren't willing to carry around hundreds of pictures of crying babies, tasty breakfast dishes, stupid-looking animals, old people, and so forth, to randomly flourish during conversation with people.  It's a dying art, and I for one am glad that the chess.com forums are keeping it alive!

I try to avoid the public forums as much as possible now, except if I see a certain topic or two that I have to reply to. There are more than enough people on this site that are going to attack and thread hijack topics. That makes it like any other "forums driven" site in a lot of ways. You get a couple of million people together, there are bound to be just a few rotten apples. As a friend that I have met on here told me: Everybody projects themselves as being 7 feet tall.

Eventually you'll see the ones that shine through and are helpful and approachable, it won't take you that long to see the ones to avoid. Sad but true.  Frown

I check in now-and-then.  It's depressing.  People seem to live in here, always with nothing to say.  It's like a microcosm of sociocultural devolution.  I think cynicism is justified.

I've read the first post twice and now I am wondering what it is supposed to achieve. A little bit of Christmas Tolerance?

I agree with a lot that was said here.

Just goes to show that chess and intelligence do not go hand in hand.Laughing

Personally, I just comment in posts that I think I may be able to contribute positively...and just ignore any negative comments.

I wanted to just say to the op, just come to play chess, who cares about the posts, then I remembered getting my dander up on a thread I had started. So for the most part as someone else said earlier, I post when I think I'm helping out, or a general comment, or like in this case, don't let it get to you, playing chess wins out over postings any day,,,,,,
