A buddy of mine and I are playing a friendly game of chess. I am black and he is white. When we reach this position (After move 45 for white), he says it is a draw. I decline the draw. I feel that this is a win for black, if played properly. Do you feel that white has a draw? Please share your thoughts and analysis of this game. Thank you!

Dead draw and not even close. Let's figure out what black need to do to get a win:

K+R vs K = win

K+N+B vs K=win

Notice these results all require black to win a piece or at least an exchange.

These are all draws:

1) K+R+either piece vs K+R (because the opponent rook is basically immune and will either block checks or block your king out of the action. A rook trade is instant draw. This is not completely trivial with knight forks and stuff but it is not a difficult draw.)

2) K+N+B vs K+B (because knight and bishop checkmates are tricky and require correct tempo plays. With a bishop the king is never "forced" and therefore you cannot checkmate. Very easy draw.)

After the above consideration, we look at your position and find that the draw is easy. The idea is that black has too many pieces around that a trade cannot be avoided, and any piece trade is a draw.

Thank you both for your input :) A draw? Interesting. If I were playing this position in a tournament, I would certainly play it out. Chess games are decided by the player who makes the fewest mistakes.
