Don't resign too early

Don't resign too early, since your opponent (which could be me) could have made a big mistake, allowing a mate in one, as shown here.

This is a practical lesson demonstrated by a beautiful example.

I can totally feel why Black resigned ... often, after the loss of a queen, most people (including myself) are quick to resign before fully examining the chessboard.

Thanks for sharing !!

wow, I don't think I would've resigned, but I don't think I would've seen the mate

Haha, loved the game! When black dropped the queen, I was thinking something like "Oh-oh, the queen is go-... wait a minute, White doesn't have f2 for the king, and the rook...!"

Very nice! This teaches us we ALWAYS have to look EVERYWHERE for EVERY possible move...

Who on earth would play Nxe4 without realizing it was a solid move Yell

AnastasiaStyles

Not only "not realising Rd1 was checkmate", but probably realising that Qxd8 would be checkmate iff it were your move, and subconsciously registering that as a grave threat even though it's really not.

As for me, I'll not resign for loss of material, but will generally resign if I see it's obvious there's no way I can avoid mate with reasonable play.

(ie, if I have a King and he has a King and at least one pawn that I can't stop from Queening, then I'll resign, etc)

Time was, I'd not resign regardless of anything, hoping for a stalemate (hey, Kasparov fell into a stalemate trap to McDonald, so if Kasparov can screw up like that, I don't think it's too disrespectful to hold out hope that my typically 1400-1800 opponents on here might on occasion do likewise), but at the moment I'd rather resign such situations and concentrate my time on games from which I can learn more.

And sure, one generally learns more from games lost than games won, BUT when the game's in a position with a forced mate available, I think the lesson's learned by that point.

Morphy vs Kasparov?

Er, McDonald. Blond moment. Have now edited to correct Embarassed

Good point esp in OTB chess. However I play CC almost exclusively and I gotta say it's very hard (for me at least) to keep on looking at a game where, say for example, I blew the exchange in return for nothing and have to keep on being reminded of my stupidity move after move after move...somehow the remote chance of getting down to a drawn K+R vs K+B endgame doesn't seem like it's worth the aggravation...

Here, I considered resigning 11 moves in. I didn't, and my opponent resigned 6 moves later.

A moment in which one does or says something that is ridiculous by one's own standards, due to a momentary lapse of cognitive function.

In this case, I had been thinking about Morphy and went on to try to comment about a game between Kasparov and McDonald.

Much in the same manner as a person who is typing and talking and writes what they're saying instead of what they meant to be typing.

Blondes have more fun? Don't know how it is in the Philipines, but in Britain (and I think in America), jokes about stupidity are made about blondes.
