It can, but usually it doesn't ...
Can Chess Makes One Smarter?
Yes of course it makes you smarter. We're not talking about someone who plays a game every 6 months. We're talking about people who practice and practice, not to mention practice the correct way with chess players you can learn from.
if you want to be smart at anything, you can devote time to learning it. chess won't make you smart (though many become smartypantses), learning more about chess might make you smarter at chess, lot of people seem to play lot of chess without getting any way smart at it or anything else!
I think everything that challenges the mind makes us smarter as humans.
chess challenges in various ways such as memory , predicting moves, guessing, visualization and analyzing positions
It cannot really make a person smarter, but it can help a person keep their brain healthy and maximize their brain to it's full potential. There is evidence of this in multiple studies.
Smarter in what sense? I don't think chess will make you smarter any more than poker or checkers or bridge etc... which is probably very little if at all.
I've always heard that chess makes you smarter, but everyone I heard it from was a chessplayer.
I have also heard it from none chessplayers who assumes that I am a genius interested in solving non chess related puzzles because I play chess and therefore come to me with some puzzles.
Yes they can.
Especialy nowadays there is not many activities that excercise your brain such like chess. Brain is like a muscle - you do work with it, it stays lively and can do much.
So play chess.
"smart" in the sense of being able to solve faster any intellectual problem you might encounter (what is the fastest way to go back home after picking my child at school ? In how much time would installing solar panels on my house become profitable ? What should I say now (when negociating for a raise) ? etc.), certainly not.
"smart" in the sense of having a brain able to concentrate for long, yes.
It does not make you think faster - it teaches you to think longer.
Yes of course it makes you smarter. We're not talking about someone who plays a game every 6 months. We're talking about people who practice and practice, not to mention practice the correct way with chess players you can learn from.
Smart at chess? Sure. Just don't go out, unless it's to the chess club.
I think that there some things that you learn while getting good at chess that also help more generally. For instance, getting better at chess will improve your concentration a lot, and you will be better at concentrating on other things as well.
Also optimizing your shape for chess helps general intelligence too, for instance getting enough sleep, being in sufficient shape to be able to sit and think for hours and hours, and that helps in other fields as well.
But on the flip side, all the time spent on getting better at chess could have been spent on anything else. Like math, or history, or writing, or computer programming.
I think it makes you slightly smarter but if that's your goal, there are other things to do that work better.
Yes, it teaches calculation and planning, and those skills you take with you in other areas. Chess also teaches you about the world we live in, as it teaches that truth isn't relative, but objective. It teaches that there are many situations where there is a best answer, but many times it's more practical looking for a great decision rather than trying to find the optimal/best decision, sometimes due to deadlines and whatnot.
