If I hear one more time that chess is a SPORT, I'm going to go BALLISTIC. Chess is not--even in the LOOSEST sense--a sport. Don't argue with the FACTS. Trust me, you won't win this one. Oh, I'm sure a few TROLLS out there, a few FLAMERS will defend the "sportiness" of chess, but I will reduce them to quivering masses of jello in short order.

Here are just a few definitions of sport:

Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

An active diversion requiring physical exertion.

A specific diversion involving physical exercise and having a set form and body of rules.

Physical activity engaged in for pleasure.

Do you all see the common thread of the most NECESSARY element that is needed inorder for something to be considered a sport? PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.

There is no physical activity in chess, period! Never has been, never will be. Once again, I'm sure there will be some of you out there grasping at straws.....so:

Physical activity: Energetic action or movement pertaining to the body as distinguished from the mind or spirit.

PERIOD! CASE CLOSED! END OF DISCUSSION! I REST MY CASE!

There is no need to respond to this commentary. It is merely posted here for clarification purposes only.

Now, sit back, and watch to see who the REAL TROLLS and FLAMERS are.

hint: they will be the ones who cant resist responding to this topic with anger and argument. You may as well try to argue that we live on the moon.

"Chess is a sport." This has been debated in the past. Are you running out of material?

BTW, going ballistic yet? Tongue out

I'm just pointing out that the topic of "Chess is a sport" had been hotly debated here in the past. It is in no way reflective of my beliefs.

Billiards is a game, but it does require physical ability.

Marksmanship is a sport, but requires the same physical ability as does billiards.

I doubt if anyone has ever lost any sleep over those facts.

Chess is obviously a sport of the mind, not a physical sport.  Just like there are contact and non-contact sports, eg. tennis vs. soccer.  Chess is like THE sport for the brain

chess would qualify as a sport if it was more like Hockey - if your opponent gets the advantage just throw the board at him - then jump him and begin pounding on his face - chess fans would love that

Stacking does have physical activity. It takes a quick arm, hand-eye coordination, and slight of hand and also as cheater_1 had posted, physical exersion.

So, what? Do you move the pieces with your mind? Lol

Actually, I don't know if I would call chess a sport either, but anyone on the site clearly loves chess regardless.

I believe the single-tournament, single-player, record for resignations by sweeping all the pieces from the table and smashing the board over his opponents' heads was 7 (set back in the mid 1930s).  (Maybe that was the inspiration for the invention of roll-up boards.)

That sounds pretty physical to me.
