Chess player/theoretician whose also written on other subjects.

I know Lasker has written a number of publications, but as with others I don't like Lasker's "psychology" aspect of it and hear that some of his works aren't rated highly. 

I'm looking for something that someone like Steinitz or Philidor wrote, particularly to do with life. Something like How Life Imitates Chess, which I read but wasn't very impressed with (it was really just an annotated games book in disguise, with some self-help book style language such as be aggressive, be tactful, be confident, work hard, that type of thing).  

What about novels? Vladimir Nabokov. Or not technical chess books? (about chessplayers) Gennadi Sosonko.

I'm actually not familiar with his chess at all (I love literature though)

Staunton wrote a great deal about Shakespeare. Ed. Lasker wrote about the game of Go. Fine wrote books on psychology.

Fischer wrote "I was tortured in a Pasedena jail house". It was pamphlet on a incident in Texas he experienced.
