Crazy Streaks on Tactics Trainer

Sort:

On Tactics Trainer here on Chess.com, does anyone else experience ridiculous streaks? For example, today I went from 1812 to 1737 in a matter of 15 minutes by getting like 12 problems wrong in a row. 15 minutes later, I was right back to 1800 after getting about 10 right in a row. In the losing streak, I felt that my vision was bad and I was in bad form, but I  then inexplicably turned it around and felt in good form again. I can't find an explanation for this occurence and peculiar fluctuation in my consistency and Tactics Rating. Is it possible that the problems just get very hard for a streak? any ideas would be appreciated.

1. Luck of the draw?

2. You changed your streak when  you realized you were in 'bad form'.

3. You moved into a range of puzzles that had themes you were not familiar with.

4. Someone is sitting at the other end of the line messing with you.

I'm inclined to think it was #4. But don't tell them I know.

Compare it to playing baseball and going into a slump. You could be doing bad for a week and then hit 2 HR one day. Sometimes you feel good and then sometimes you don't

interesting. do you think it reflects the form I am currently in? I have a major tournament coming up, so this is very important

I know my tactics rating is so low! I don't know why though maybe my tactical vision is just bad

what do you suggest I do to get better with tactics?

One thing I've heard, but have yet to find a good source for, is to study by theme.

The Chess.com TT randomly selects puzzles by rating.

it's just really frustrating because I have been working on tactics a lot, but I constantly see this crazy fluctuations, showing me that my work has not paid off at all

Maube you just suck at chess.Laughing

All aspects of chess have the ability to frustrate us all like this.

haha you are right.

what is most annoying though is that my performance in Tactics Trainer and similar programs (like ChessTempo) does not really reflect the level I am at (~1800 USCF). What does this mean?? do I just need to improve my tactics or is there something I am missing?

Oh. I would say that difference is not very important.

Despite what many will try to lead you to believe; chess is not 100% tactics or 99% tactics or whatever.

No doubt, it is important. But, without the ability to formulate strategy, tactics lose a lot of their bite.

Perhaps you are really good at strategy.

And to the question "do I just need to improve my tactics" the answer is always YES no matter your rating or title.

Blitz tactics? What in the world is that?

With blitz tactics (on CT website) time is important. If you are too slow and have the correct solution then you will lose some points. Not so much as when you fail to find the solution but you will lose points.

Oh. You mean the way TT works here?

cornbeefhashvili

I tend to do better when I hit a range of puzzles that are in my tactical set. However, I am slow and a lot of times have to look at what's going on with the entire board before deciding on a move. It sucks when you get the first move right and then bzzzzzzzzzt!

Scottrf

Went 50-0 when I actually concentrated and didn't rush.

My tactics are just so much weaker than my actual strength! you're saying that there must be something else in my overall chess game that compensates for it?

zjablow1

good advice. I am just worried about how my poor tactics performance of  chess.com and chesstempo reflects my form.

zjablow1

Unfortunately, I don't have the money. but I am going to be spending a lot more time on tactics and hopefully improve. I am still very confused about what this means for my current condition in chess

thanks. with the MD Open coming up, I can't be taking any risks ;)

I experience losing streaks if I train if I am tired, I miss the most obvious tactics. however if I have got 8 hours of sleep I gain a lot of rating points.

of course if you are hungry or thirsty your mind isn't focused on finding tactics.

drink water before your  brain signals you are thirsty.

many factors are important.
