Dvoretsky endgame studygroup?

Sort:

Dear chessfreinds!

I can not find any studygrouo based on the excellent book of Mark Dvoretsky. This is for 1500-2000 USCF, one of the best material there is.

If there would be intrest in starting such a group I would consider coadmin that and contribute a lot. Such a project is between 12-18 month but will umprove your understanding very much and create a gut feeling for the correct moves and hopefully a comprehensive understanding leading to more wins instead of draws in won positions.

Feel free to comment or suggest or flame.....

*EDIT* I started one group, lets see if there is any intrest.

The Third Edition of a Modern Classic

When you are serious about improving your endgame skills, it is time for Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual

Perhaps the best known and most respected instructor of world class chessplayers, Mark Dvoretsky has produced a comprehensive work on the endgame that will reward players of all strengths.

For those ready to immerse themselves in endgame theory, there may be no better manual available today. But, even if you do not play at master level, the book has been designed to help your endgame too.

Basic theories and "must-know" concepts are highlighted in blue. You may skip the more complex analysis, focus on the text in blue, and still improve your endgame technique.

When it appeared in 2003, the first edition of Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual was immediately recognized by novice and master alike as one of the best books ever published on the endgame.

The second edition was revised and enlarged to over 400 pages - covering all the most important concepts required for endgame mastery. Mark Dvoretsky has continued to re-examine and re-work the material.

The result is this revised and updated third edition. Not only working independently, but also with the help of attentive readers, masters and grandmasters, the author’s efforts have resulted in what can only be described as the definitive work on endgame theory and practice.

Mark Dvoretsky is considered by many to be the premier chess instructor of our era. His works on the middlegame and endgame have set the standard by which other chess books are measured. He lives with his family in Moscow, Russia.

From the Foreword to the First Edition by Grandmaster Artur Yusupov:
"I am sure that those who study this work carefully will not only play the endgame better, but overall, their play will improve. One of the secrets of the Russian chess school is now before you, dear reader!"

British Champion GM Jacob Aagaard:
"This book is Dvoretsky's most significant book. It gives the ambitious player a chance to do top level training, but also gives the amateur a chance to sec what is really important. If any chess book can make you a better player, this is it. "

GM Lubomir Kavalek in The Wasington Post:
"Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual ... may well be the chess book of the year... [It comes] close to an ultimate one-volume manual on the endgame."

IM John Donaldson:
"The noted Russian trainer has produced a classic guide to learning the endgame... Highly recommended!"

John Watson, The Week In Chess:
"Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual is quite simply a masterpiece of research and insight. (..) This is a particularly important book from the standpoint of clarifying, correcting, and extending the theory of endings. Most of all, Dvoretsky's analysis is staggering in its depth and accuracy."

 Erik Sobjerg: Seagaard Chess Reviews
"This is an extraordinary good chess book. To call this the best book on endgames ever written seems to be an opinion shared by almost all reviewers and commentators. And I must say that I am not to disagree."

It would be really great if we all had a copy of the book.

This might be way over my head, but since I already have the book (bought it in a sale) I might give it a shot.

It is 12-24 month work for all of us! I it really hard work. But it will pay off :)

It says on mine right on the binding underneath Manual.

"This book is Dvoretsky's most significant book."

Agree with Aagard that it's a great book although School of Chess Excellence 2 is nothing to sneeze at either.

One should read a book dedicated to the specific endgame before tackling the relevant chapter in DVE however.

Is 1500-2000 really appropriate? I'm more inclined to think 2000-2500. Silman's endgame book seems more suitable for class players. Not to stop anyone from studying Dvoretsky, but it could be very slow going.

School of Chess Excellence 1-4 is a must have in your library indeed!

@metalRatel I do not agree, it takes two years for all players, just if you start to early like 1800 belowish, you have to take the course twice ;)
