I need your opinion about opening preparation vs time control

Hi, everyone.thanks for read this.I have a major problem about opening preparation or opening repertoire for a few kind of time control. There are games 10min,15min,20min,25min,30min,45min,1hour and 1 1/2hour time control.

1)my teacher said the gambit game can be play on rapid and below like time control 20minutes and below.Except Queen Gambit that suits on any time control. He said that play the gambit with other than he mention in above will put me in danger.what he mean by "play the gambit will put me in danger"?and will you recommend me to play gambit games or not for rapid games?

2)i made my worst opening preparatory by mistaking play classical style in 2 rapid tournament last year,Dec 2012.I play style "surround" than i usually play "fancy" or greek give sacrifice.Should i stay on 'fancy' style or 'surround' style?

3)What would you suggest for me to play on 45min time control and above?

I appreciate any comment or suggestion from you all, accept any levels ratings opinion.your suggest may helpful for me.Thanks.

You either know how to play an opening or you don't - regardless of the TL. It's hard enough trying to learn openings, middlegames and endgames without making it harder by trying to come up with unnecessary and meaningless categories of opening preparation based on TLs.

Offhand it sounds to me like you're over-emphasizing opening preparation when you also need to be studying tactics, combinations and endgames. I've noticed IM pfren has frequenly advised amateurs to concentrate on learning the basic principles and strategies of openings, and not waste time on needlessly memorizing reams of "state-of-the-art" analysis that none of their opponents will ever play against them anyway.

I occasionally play garbage and unsound openings in blitz games, esp vs much lower rated players. In turn-based games I almost always try to play sound openings since my opponents always have the opportunity to look up whats wrong with "junk openings" like the Latvian Counter Gambit for instance.

By, 'putting you in danger', your teacher means that with much time to think your opponent will most likely be able to navigate their way through the problems posed by the gambits and emerge with extra material.

Play the same openings in every time control, you will do better with an unsound opening you know well, than a sound one you only play on occasion you play games with x time constraints.

Play what you feel comfortable with but most importantly, just have fun with the game...the true pleasure of this game is not about winning every game...just enjoy the game!
