I am an averagely good chess player. However the reason that I lose so many games is either:

  • Bad opening
  • Silly misakes
  • Rush the clock)by the time the match is finished I still have at least 4/5 of my time left.

If you have any tips they would be grateful as I have a tournament coming up.

Thank you,Smile

play common openings, there doesn't have to be any fireworks there if you're not comfortable with onorthodox openings. Stick to what you know best.

Take your time, silly mistakes are unneccesary. With this goes; enjoy playing. You can only concentrate and play well if you really want to play and really want to win.

your last problem confirmed this.

good luck on your tourney

Well, before chess.com I kept getting thrashed by others in my school. Now because of chess.com, they're scared to verse me! Use this opening database (and make sure you set the book to 'Shredder 11 Book') to try and study at least e4 and d4 openings. If you have more time, try the c4 and Nf3 ones as well. I see that you have hardly played any games. Try experimenting with openings and then trying them on different people at chess.com. Although it's not like OTB (Over the Board) chess, it will give you more time to spot mistakes, tactical opportunities, etc. Read a few chess books. If you take chess seriously, you won't find them boring! Use the Tactics Trainer and try out Chess Mentor demo. Finally...try not to study way too much and leave everything else behindWink.

oh and one more thing, you might want to consider not posting everywhere else. If you spam everywhere you could get problems, just keep to the topic

I only saw the one game that you abandoned in the opening after the loss of one game.  The best thing you could do is to not do that.  If you are a pawn behind and you keep on playing, you can learn to fight back.  You will be under more pressure than the opponent who has the extra pawn and this will help focus your thinking too.  Resign only after you are say six or more points behind and feel you have exhausted the fight in your position.

The opening is actually confusing and complicated.  If it helps, maybe consult a book.  check out the book store at www.uschess.org and pick an opening for white and an opening for black.  Try for something brutal rather than something subtle--maybe gambits.

Challenge the highest rated players you can.

Good luck!
