The main difference between chess and alcohol is that chess does less damage to the liver.

another difference is that alcohol makes you better immediately, while chess takes more time. Sealed

you need to study chess not play so if you study it,it is good for the brain otherwise

Otherwise your brain starts to degenerate?

Playing is good for the brain too unless you think with your butt but then at least your butt gets smart.

Look, you can burn calories by rock climbing, or watching tv.

Likewise chess can apparently teach you memorization and story telling skills, poker can teach you risk analysis and Baysean theorem, Starcraft can teach you human psychology and develop your brain's motor regions, tic tac toe can probably teach you something..

Of course chess can teach you something, but I wouldn't bet on a large amount of chess to turn you into a straight A student or social butterfly or anything.

Personally, I wouldn't bet on that social butterfly thing either ... and I'm pretty sure tic tac toe teaches you to start with X in the center square. So that's something. :-)

its good until it consumes your time then its a killer, moderation is for cowards but there is a line when cowards cross it could backfire, so the moral is, yeah but only too a certain extent. ya digg

Would like to digg, but find myself a bit perplexed by the idea of backfiring on moderation-prone cowards just because the poor things cross an unspecified line of some sort... I'll ponder it.  It certainly is something to think about. :-)

Watching rock climbing on YouTube causes my heart to race. Does that burn calories?

Anything that causes your heart to race has Got to be good for you, I say.  Sometimes when I've actually found (i.e.: "stumbled across") a Really good chess move, and I think my opponent Might actually fall into my "clever trap," my heart races, too!

Really?  My heart races when German Shepherds are chewing on me.  I'm pretty sure that's not good for me.

Just remember what Nietzsche said:  "What doesn't kill you makes you go to the emergency room."  (Those German philosophers really knew stuff, didn't they?)

all this talk about good vs bad has got me remembering that I dont really care about whats good or bad...the only thing that matters truely is to enjoy the ride before my train leaves (for good)

(Chess must be bad for the brain -- all I can remember now is slogans from the '60's ... sad, just sad ...)

DrSpudnik

If it feels bad, do it!

I will ask my brain to see what it thinks and the answer is there is no way known to reverse entropy that's the last time I consult it on anything

Does this happen often, bp? I think I could help you with some strategies to avoid these events in the future.

The decade of the sixties travelled  past

Like the afternoon flight of a white dove

Leaving ideas. Some did some didn't last.

End war, civil rights, the summer of love.
