All of the above!
Is "Chess",An obsession,puzzle,passtime or profession?
Chess is 3-dimensional physics for young minds and old. 3-dimensional (forward/back, left/right, time) The diagonals are the "wave" as in field theory for 4-dimensional physics in our universe, only 3-dimensional. The files and the ranks are the particle 3-dimensional space.
If you would like to know more please let me know.
You didn't put "Board Game".
Board Game? Where we're going with this 3-D physics theory we don't need no stinking Board Game!
I don't think "puzzle" belongs in the list.
It is! its in the daily puzzle, dont ya get it everytime ya log on. Thre a bit daft sometimes.
Honestly I wish more people outside of Russia saw it as mental calisthenics.. While it is all the things you mentioned.. I believe it's primary value lies in the changes in can bring about to your mind.
While some people do enjoy lifting weights, some people even do it for a living. Most people believe it's greatest value is that it makes you stronger.
While chess is generally more respected than monopoly, I think most people in America at least still view it as a game.. And anyone who devotes a large amount of time to it is simply spending way to much time with a game.
I really believe if the general public was made to understand how the study of it actually increases your Memorization ability, reasoning ability, and spatial interpretation and recognition (The cornerstones of what we consider IQ) it might receive more respect.
Right now (at least in America) we have a culture where chess is only for smart people, it's a geeks game. Similiar to Bodybuilding in the early 20th century, where lifting weights was only for circus strongmen.
I personally believe its greatest value, is that it's exercise.
Really? I'd have thought board games might be a good distraction in the lunatic asylum.
Indeed, the inmates have been running the place for some time now.
In addition to being all of the above chess is a medicine. By keeping the mind active I believe chess delays or prevents the onset of senility or possibly Alzheimer's.
