Losing fewer points based on current rating

Is there difference in the rating points gained or lost based on your current rating? I’d assume so, in which case, when playing more than one game, is there a noticeable advantage in waiting until you’ve lost a game before making a winning move in another? That way, the number of points taken from losing the game will be fewer as your rating will be lower than if you’d already gained the points from the win in the other game.

OK I know ratings don’t really matter and I know it’s unlikely to be a particularly big difference but it’s just something I was thinking about while I’m supposed to be working.

It's not based on your rating but on the rating difference between you and your opponent.

I think when you play online (correspondence) chess, the rating adjustments will be decided at the start of the match, but I'm not sure

No, the rating adjustments are based on the end of the match. And it is to your advantage to lose first. If you lose first your rating goes down, and then you get a bigger boost from winning second because the rating difference is larger. If you win first your rating goes up (less than if you'd won second) and then you lose more because the rating difference is narrower.

But generally the advantage you'd get is really small, and even if you could repeat it to get a significant gain, the system would catch up with you eventually.

That's what I thought. So by the same token, if your opponent wins another of his games before you beat him, you get slightly more points. It's not a system I'm actually going to employ, it was just an idle thought really. The best way to improve ones rating is to get better at chess. That's the method I intend to use.
