Nakamura defeats Rybka in a loooong game

Can someone post the history of this weird game? Is Rybka not programmed to resign when everything is lost?

271 moves Surprised

He also beat Carlsen in a blitz tournament final match up, right after Carlsen had won the world blitz tournament convincingly.

this is crap for a game.  All Naka did was repeat the position dozens of times in there and waited for rybka to mess up.  I'm disappointed.

17 more moves and it could've claimed a draw per the 50 moves rule!

siamesenightmare93

what the hell with all those bishops???

gbidari

That's one of the dumbest games I ever saw.

panderson2

Did Rybka had to start with the Grob?

benws

i don't know what either player is doing in that game.

but why isn't this game on this chess records page? http://www.xs4all.nl/~timkr/records/recordstxt.htm#Longest%20game

it's longer than the longest game on that list.

trysts

That was the worst game I've ever seen.

the second link that goldendog posted has some good video footage.

I was watching the 3rd video. It's strange, it looks like a shopping centre. Folk are slowing sliding up an escalator as two of the greatest blitz players have a dust up. I wonder if they even knew a slither of the greatness they'd just seen.

Here's a comment I found on Youtube, sounds about right:

"No see twice Naka sacked material then locked up the position. the computer (Rybka) is unable to asses that it should accept a draw because it is up material and so makes a bad move to avoid 50 move draw rule Naka played ideal anti computer chess."

Yeah, either a shopping center or one of those big train stations. Definetly doesn't seem to be an ideal venue for top-level chess, but I guess it was good for the sponsors.

there is also some chat here about the game:

why would you be disappointed?? first of all the Engine wasn't offering a draw! so naka had three choices- 1. force a win (impossible)  resign (hahaha) or play on until the engine accepts that the position is a draw. I dont think he expected Rybka to mess up

I like how naka wasn't afraid of sacing two exchanges, realizing that the rooks have no more value than the minors.

I don't know how people can complain about this game: moving back and forth a lot... what else are you going to do against rybka, especially in a 3 0 game?

Nakamura outlasted a COMPUTER, and the strongest one, that's absoluetly superhuman. Think about it, he played 271 moves in 3 minutes with no increment! That's unbelievable enough (he pretty much couldn't afford to take any thinks during that game, and even if you premoved as fast as you could against your grandmother it would be hard! And keep in mind computers can make a move the instant you make one too), but he outplays rybka (as slowly as he was) in this time too, in fact taking the risk of timing out by even embarrasing rybka at the end with the bishops. That is just awesome.

I really wish I could see live footage of that game.

Keep in mind that for every one of these exploits Nakamura gets going on the computer, he loses like 50 games in a row to it trying to set it up.

I would assume that, yeah. But just the fact that he did it at all in my opinion is very impressive. I've seen a grandmaster (of course not quite at naka's calibur) receive as much as rook odds when playing a somewhat weaker computer at this time control and lose many times.

Isn't Naka supposed to be like the best bullet player in the world or something?

why didnt he get queens why did he get all rooks
