need a strong free chess engine

I got a copy of the rybka 2.3 engine wich I think is a fake since I was able to beat it and I'm pretty sure I'm not a WGM. It got the same options and stuff as rybka seems to have (I looked at the site). I tried it against the rybka 1.0 beta wich is free and after 5 games there were two draws and 3 wins for rybka 2.3. So now I need something stronger to test it against. Anyone have any idea what to try? Preferably something that works with Arena.

I don't know if it's strong to your liking, but I use Crafty; surely there are many more 'free' engines out there.

Thanks alot. The link you gave doesn't seem to work though.

That's the FTP site so that you can download immediately, sorry it didn't work.  Good to know you got it anyway.  Remember there are other companion files to the executable.  (book.bin, bookc.bin and books.bin if you're in Windows)

Arasan it quite good

I am playing and comparing the Fruit, Phalanx, and Crafty engines right now.  For my first impression, I am liking the Crafty engine for its book.

They are all in the Ubuntu Repository if you swing that way.

This is great, I have been thinking about getting a Chess Engine for myself, but was unsure how to go about it.  I am downloading Crafty right now.

Rybka is the best oneLaughing

On relatively short time controls, on my 2.1Ghz computer, Rybka 1.0 Beta, Fruit 2.3.1, Toga II and Spike 1.2 are all pretty strong. They're all free or open source.

None of it is pirated, it's all just free...
