New Year's Chess Resolutions

Well, the end of the year and the decade is quickly approaching, hard to
believe.  Since this is a time for mental renewal, I have been thinking about
how to improve my chess.
I think I am going to really concentrate on improving my all-around game,
especially my lame blitz abilities.  I will try to divide my time between:

Chess Mentor
Tactics Trainer
Game Explorer for openings
Computer Workout for endings
Live Chess
Online Chess

I think ultimately it is best to practice all areas of the game and be as well-
rounded as possible.  This is easier said than done, however, as one tends to
practice strengths instead of weaknesses, in my case I find Endgame practice
tedious but I could definitely use the help.

So what are your New Year's Chess Resolutions?

Good thread. I'm going to really start studying Chess for 2-3 hours a day, no excuses.

I'm going to totally revamp my openings. I'll never play E4 again. I'm going to respond to E4 with the Alekhines and to D4 with the Nimzo Indian. Openings I have never played before.

I really think that it's going to improve my game immensly, once I start becoming familiar with all these different openings and positions.

New Year Resolutions:

  • To break the 2000 Fide barrier.
  • To win an Open.
  • To beat a Grandmaster.

If I do one of these I will be happy, if I do two then I will be delighted and if I do all three then I will be dancing on top of the table! Cool

To try and remember how the pony moves.

I'm making the same New Year's resolution I always make: stop making stupid New Year's resolutions.

dc1985

My goal for this year is to break 1700USCF, 1800 if I can make it.

I would also like to win the Alabama state championship u18 section, but that might be a tad far-fetched.

RandomJSDev

1800 USCF.

SlipperySims

No more stupid blunders--was just trying that f7 trap w/bishop and knight--totally left my knight exposed to attack by queen.

Mainline_Novelty

nuclearturkey

I will seriously study every day for 3 hours. The days when I'm playing at my club or in a tournament can be exceptions. I can't keep being lazy if I'm going to seriously take my game to the next level.

It's pointless setting a goal to break a certain rating. If I work hard and when playing rated games only think of solving the problems directly in front of me the results will take care of themselves...

Play more chess!

Guvahnor

Get a real life rating. :D

Last year, I set three:

My central chess goal over the next year (plus a couple of months) is to achieve an A Class USCF Rating, that is over 1800. As part of the work needed to get there, I am putting on record three New Year's Resolutions. I welcome my readers to inquire into my progress and shame me for any failings.

1. Reduce Online Blitz

2. Intensify Endgame Training

3. Demand Consistency in Tactics Training Plus

I failed. By middle May, I was back to playing endless blitz. My endgame training continues along a lethargic path, and Tactics Training Plus has become infrequent. However, a USCF rating over 1800 by the coming spring was the central purpose. I'm currently at 1857!

Make good resolutions, folks. They might pay dividends.
