Then you'd be stuck with each player taking two moves to get each pawn to the center and that would be a drag.
one move chess could do without

What do you mean?

Hey Social Climber; I got a job for you. I'm gonna give you a Harley Motorcycle. All I want you to do is drive around Texas. You'll get further instructions later.

http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/en-passant--cheater2
It was introduced in the 15th century by the same people who came up with the manoeuvre whereby a pawn can jump forward two spaces in its first move. If opposing pawn was already in blocking/attack position of defending pawn's first space forward, and avoided the confrontation with a two space jump, it was decided by those same people at the same time that a counter-move, the en passant would come into play.
In a case where it is the only option left for play in a game, the en passant must be used.
I love this site.
Ten minutes ago I knew nothing about the matter, and now I get it.
Awesome.
I do think its valid, that people who decry it are being a bit emotional.
Its strategy, its part of the game.
Like when people complain about bluffing or bingo in poker.
You have options. how you react is still 'the game'.
Chess is so old we forget it was created by people like us. It isn't god, and its not religion.
My board isn't made of stone.
Its made of glass.

En Passant. The maneuver should be banned. It is so annoying.
Oh look, another genius who knows better how chess should work then the rest of the world.
If we listen to 1001 of you guys, then we can do 1001 rule changes at the same time, isn't that great ?

who says chess players are anal academics?

well, it may be true..
guilty

I was just referred to this great thread.
I'm boycotting en passant. this is a backstabbing free zone.

I heard a funny legend about why they changed the rules.
I don't know if its true;however, I must admit I do like the legend and believe its true lol.
The reason I heard they changed the rule was becuase they thought chess was to slow lol so they tryed to speed it up. Mainly the opening. They thought the opening was so slow.
The legend has it people complained becuase they had other stuff to do. lol. Which makes me laugh. I don't think that was the main reason. However, I can't help but to laugh. They changed the rule to allow pawns to move 2 spots in the opening becuase people were busy.
They couldn't be up all night using up there candle light becuase of an opening. An you know they didn't have electricity back than only candles. They had things to do cows to milk, things to farm. They didn't have a Wal-Mart. They don't even know what that is. They couldn't be there playing pawn moves 1 at a time. Had to speed that up.
Could you imagine them telling each other they going to play 1.e4 e5.
This is how it would be like.

Then you'd be stuck with each player taking two moves to get each pawn to the center and that would be a drag.
What do you mean?
I think he means it goes together with the pawn two step jump opening move

You are not compelled to take the pawn you know, you can make another move........

I feel chess could have a different flavor without castling. It'd require greater thought on defending the king, and reduce the dumbing down "castle as fast as you can" which feels just like almost dumb. For some reason i have the impression that castling was a rule created by bad players for not having to worry about king's safety too much and get away with a move that hides the king to the other side of where a player was attacking

- Might help if you explained why the move is annoying. Either it's to your advantage to EP or it's not.

Actually some of the most exciting games are when one side doesn't castle, but that sometimes means that player with his king in the center gets mated.
troll alert: Just to let you all know social_climber is a troll. I find his most interesting post (for laughing) is the one he deleted about going to prison, then the military wanted him so he became a sailor and wanted to play chess with officers onboard ship, etc. Shame all his prison posts were deleted as well as I really enjoyed the humor.
Actually, they were not deleted, but moved to off topic section.
