people resigning

I think the administrators should change the points system for people who resign halfway through a game because they are loosing and they know they can't win. I think they should be penalised heavy like a -50 to their ranking. That's my two bobs worth.

rubygabbi

Paulgeo, you must know that the official rules of chess allow for resignation at any stage of a game, and that resignation is the rated equivalent of a checkmate.

If a player realizes he's in a hopeless position, why should he be penalized for resigning? For depriving his opponent of a fait accompli?

tomjoad

Silly thread. Of course there shouldn't be a penalty for resigning. Yes, it can be frustrating to not have follow-through on a winning position but dude - you won.

Never ceases to amaze me! There are, of course, weightier issues to discuss.

i had a game last year where the person resigned out of the blue... only then did i see how i could force a material advantage.... i guess he was expecting it.

Not to worry!  I'll make some popcorn and we can munch while we watch the fight.  Cool

Oh c'mon. The sky is not blue.

The exact opposite of what you say, paulgeo. An idiot should not be allowed to continue a game that everyone, including the idiot, knows is over.  The carry-on is just comedy, not chess.

Conflagration_Planet

Danged when you do resign, and danged when you don't!

checkersgosu

LOL. I don't know why anybody would resign against paulgeo. Check out his games. He'll drop a queen or rook at some point, so there's always a chance.

paulgeo

well, I guess with some of the people in this forum their intellect is a lot lower than their rankings, and as for checkersgosu I play chess to win and not pussy foot around if I need to drop my rook or queen to get the upper hand, so be it buddy.

artfizz

"In practice, most players resign an inevitably lost game before being checkmated. It is considered to be bad etiquette to not resign in a hopeless situation." - but what does wikipedia know?

Atos

The OP's win/loss ratio he has more losses than wins on all time controls. I doubt that his main problem is that too many people resign against him.

rofl, judging from your live chess record, you clearly don't "play to win"

rubygabbi

Now, now. No need to get nasty with personal attacks just because someone is informationally deprived concerning the basic rules of play...

munch . . . munch . . . munch . . . (urp)

Looks like I'll be needing a second bowl for this thread.Cool

I thought it was good etiquette to resign when you are loosing.  Am I mistaken?

ichabod801

I think people should be penalized 50 points off their rating for starting threads like this one.

paulgeo

I guess I was wrong with posting a subject in this forum with something I found that was out of the ordinary when playing. I got pounded by a bunch of intellectual genius who were quick to judge someones ability to play the game. I guess my point was taken by people with foreskins wrapped around their heads.

stanhope13

i can see your point, it can be frustrating, you don,t get your moment of glory, but i don,t think it would be fair.
