Play go

I'd like to try the chinese/japanese game of go, it seems to be fascinating. Are there any people who know and enjoy it here, besides playing chess? Thanks and sorry for the bad English.

I prefer it over chess.

Oh, yes? Can you recommend a book? Thanks!

You are very kind, thank you very much! :)

Oh, ehem...

Is there anything about you haven't any idea, Umberto? :)

Go is a great game. Here is a forum I frequent about it: http://www.lifein19x19.com

It's way different and I love the flow and ebb of the game. Good luck in learning :)  Also, I'm Rowen on those forums if you need anything.

Oh, thank you very much, John! Sure I'll check it. :)

Go may be the best board game in the world. Few rules and as far as I know and computers are still a long way off challenging the best players, but I just can't get into it. I wish I could.

What got me into it was an anime/manga called Hikaru no Go. Its got an amazing story and you kind of pick up on the game while watching it - not a whole lot mind you, just enough not to feel quite so lost!

Here are a few of my links to learn more about the game:

http://gogameguru.com/  -This one has a printable 9x9 board with pieces.

http://playgo.to/iwtg/en/  - awesome way to start!

https://starkana.org/manga/H/Hikaru_No_Go   - The Manga that started it all for me.

Hope these help! Like Chess this game is worth exploring. Have fun with it.

You can also play Go online.  Here are some Go servers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Go_server

I bought Go for about £2.00 in a charity shop. Still need to learn it though, many people have recommended it to me because I love chess so much! Thing is though, I've known how to play chess for years - It'll probably take me ages to get as good at Go as I am at chess lol

Go takes some serious dedication. I've found its easy to pick up but there are rules (like scoreing and making eye's) that are more difficult to get down.

I've been away from chess for so long I'm afraid to pick it up again. But I'm making an honest effort here. I'm just torn on which game to devote more of my time too.

That's what I'm afraid of. Plus I'm getting better and better at chess every day anyway, to a point where I either join a club or just stagnate!

Good luck with Chess Doggy!  The one thing is there are not very many people to play go with. Sure they have online places to play like KGS and IGS (Pandanet) but the number of participating individuals is only a fraction of what you can find if you want to play Chess.

Thats one of the arguments I'm having in playing Go vs. Chess myself.

Cheers Lotharen! I've loved Chess ever since I first learnt how to play it. I'm sure Go's amazing too, I've just had more practice with the former rather than the latter!

Oh, thanks a lot to everybody! :)

Go is a fantastic game but I find it can be very daunting and confusing for a new player especially when they play on a 19x19 board.

I recommend you start on a 9x9, then move to a 13x13 and finally go to the big guns, the 19x19.

There is an iOS application called "Go books" which I find to be fantastic.

Dwyrin on Youtube is awesome: https://www.youtube.com/user/dwyrin

While he plays some other games, he has study material, game reviews and lessons.

Lastly, from what I find, KGS is the most active Go server: http://www.gokgs.com/

I hope that adds to the other fantastic responses that you received :-)

It's not because Go is harder than Chess. Go is much harder for a beginner to pick up but the concepts and "puzzles" are much easier for someone more advanced.

The real issue with Go is that 19x19 boards take a VERY long time to actually play out. You thought watching Chess was boring? You need an entire bloody week to finish a 19x19 game against someone of equal skill where you are likely to make over 200 moves on AVERAGE. It's absurd and makes the game much less beginner friendly. Hell in a close game it can take over 10 minutes just to determine who won.
