Underpromoting to a Bishop
Except the Scenario where you need a knight maneuver to cover a square I don't understand why to underpromote anything else. The Queen already is a bishop and a rook. I don't think that requires more than simple logic.

Sometimes it is important to NOT cover squares (to avoid stalemate)

Or in a stalemate scenario.
Thanks Karel for the tactics example. First time I've seen that!
Guys! I thought that you undepromote a piece for what can do, not for what it can't! If a Queens diagonal scope forces a stalemate then the Bishop do the same, if a rook activity dominates the rank and the file then the Queen do the same. I don't think that there some natural example to serve such an occasion...it's wild stuff!
What a gem!!! I am talking about he game posted by tkbunny in post number 2.
Promoting to a queen or a rook would be a draw because of stalemate, so only the options of either promoting to a knight or a bishop are relevant. Promoting to a bishop forces black to exchange his last piece and thus gives white a very easily won end game.
Here are some possible variations after black's move 43... Rxd8:
Its not about the checkmate its about avoiding stalemate and trying to exchange off blacks last piece. White is winning this.

Good point. I withdraw my objection.
TurboFish, it is all pointed out in my post (post number 10) just before your post.

Glad that you're thorough. Sorry for my oversight, I am reading this thread on my puny smartphone while consuming a strong IPA. Please continue, good thread. First time I see an example of best-move underpromtion to Bishop.
TurboFish, Sometimes I am using my smartphone and it does disturb the overall look of the threads. I often get a little surprise regarding how it actually looks when I use me computer instead when reading a tread that I already read on my smartphone.
I have underpromoted to a rook and knight several times before to deliver a key check (in case of a knight) or to avoid stalemate (for a rook)
I cannot fathom a scenario where someone would underpromote to a bishop. Can anyone shed some light on this?
