Always seeing this word! What does it mean?

And please do not troll in this thread.

From the Urban Dictionary:

An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.

It is perhaps the most overused word on the internet. Many people have a habit of calling anyone who disagrees with them a troll.

On a semi-related note, have you seen the movie Troll Hunter?

I have it was a good movie to kill an hour or two toward the end I started to think it was real.

I thought it was a very entertaining premise. Pretty well executed, too.

This is simply wrong.  Here is an accurate definition:

troll v.,n.

To utter a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable responses or flames. Derives from the phrase "trolling for newbies"; which in turn comes from mainstream "trolling";, a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll. If you don't fall for the joke, you get to be in on it.

Sorry, back when I first started using the 'Net (LONG before a graphical web was around - can you say Gopher, Archie or Veronica) this may have been a more accurate definition, but in the current internet landscape the first one is a much more accurate representation of what an internet troll is.

Most users today do not even know what Usenet is.

Eh. The most overused term on the internet is either lol, or n00b. Troll makes a close third, though.

ChessSlimShady

yeah people overuse it. A troll is someone who just messes around and looks for trouble, it is kind of like trolling which is like stalling. I am not exactly sure what it means, and I'm pretty sure a lot of people who use it a lot aren't sure what it means either

My favourite Troll thread on these forums was the "You should be forced to Resign" thread, where it was argued that you should lose the game if you're the equivalent of a Rook or so behind for more than a couple of moves.

Lots of posters took this seriously and very earnestly said how wrong they thought this was, to be told that "when you have a higher rating, you will understand - so go away and study chess until you agree".

All good fun.

Lots of trolling behavior on this site, very few actual trolls --

They live under bridges & try to molest little girls coming home from school. Also used like more modern term "grenade", as in "an unattractive bar patron that you pick up for casual sex" and then blows up the next day when you're sober & vision has been restored. I've heard, anyway. Hehe-
