What the BEST and WORST tip or advice you've ever gotten about chess?

This is an expansion of another thread that only asked about the "best"advice...

Worst? Hmm... "worst tips" are harder to think of.

"Don't make pointless moves, make aggressive moves"-- sure if you want to fall into a trap, or lose a piece. Pointless moves (try to convert them to positional moves) > aggressive moves (unless you have a plan with the aggressive move).

Well Okay I guess I'll say:

Best:  look at the Whole Board...

Worst:  avoide doubled pawns, they're always bad.

Lherzolite

Best: make sure you close off opportunites for your opponent before launching some crazy attack

Worst: don't castle so your king is in a good position in the end game

Parakeetcage

best:  look at all the pieces and their effects

worst: dont give away pieces

malibumike

Best:  Learn your endgame.

Worst:  Study MCO.

Genghis_McCann

best: same as padman

worst: don't worry about pawns. They're only footsoldiers.

Crazychessplaya

Best: if you follow the general rules ("develop your knights before the bishops" etc.) you may become a good player, but the great players assess every position independently, and break the rules when needed

Worst: 1...e5 is the best answer to 1.e4.

nuclearturkey

Best: A bad plan is better than no plan at all.

Worst: Play chess, the chicks will really dig you.

This is both the best and worst advise I've ever gotten.

Really, "watch that back rank" is bad advice!?  That's great advice...

And, you're lifting the "sun in your eyes" idea from Ruy Lopez!

baronspam

Best advice, from Bruce Pandolfini, "Its called thinking, you do it with your head."

Worst advice:  Just move something!!

dmeng

I like baronspam's "best advice," I should really remember that one.

Worst advice I've seen: don't mess up.
