Knight is much better during opening and midgame.  You can't block it with another piece in a check.  It can check and take other pieces.  It's the more mobile and useful piece.  I've seen games ended because of the work of a knight.  Never seen the same affect with a bishop.  I'll say, though, that a bishop is better in end game situations than a knight.

it depends revenge, it depends

timepass12345 this position can not occur from a real game... the pawn had to be on f7 (if the last move was g7#), the king too, but then there is no way for the black king to get into that corner.

coming around on the bishops side.  I actually think that knights are better at end games than bishops.  If you've only got one bishop its hard to defend against pawns moving up.  Knights are more flexible and can jump around and create havoc

At endgames I generally prefer a knight

the value of the bishop  is theta over sine of cosine of pi.

My thought is that since you can checkmate with two bishops, but not two knights (without a blunder), the bishop would have to be worth slightly more than the knight.

You can mate with a lone Pawn (since it can be advanced for a Queen) but not with a lone Bishop. Is a Pawn stronger than a Bishop?

Look @ my post.

1. odds of getting to an endgame w/ 2 minor peices is slim 2. knights can change color 3.are better in closed positions 4. best combo is queen and knight, not queen bishop 5. its queen is rook bishop becuz rook knigh is op

Really? I thought the strongest possible combo in chess was 2 knights, 2 bishops, 2 rooks and 9 queens.

And a king.

lol.

Depends on the pawn structure.

InfiniteFlash

The objective value of the pieces do not concern me.

Making chess into a mathematical game of sorts makes it less fun than it could be.

Knight: 3.05

Bishop: 3.15 (an additional 0.2 per bishop if there is a bishop pair)

JGambit

The people that say position is everthing are correct, Ive beaten and been beaten with knight or bishop.

Has anyone here experience endgames like me N vs B where the bishop has no targets and thus becomes worse than the knight even on an open board?

chessredpanda

yes
