Who do you think would win, Magnus Carlsen or Bobby Fischer?

Please post of who would probably win in a game of chess.

chesszrade

I think Bobby Fischer

Alfredito52

Fischer easily

clunney

Carlsen is far stronger than Fischer.  This is not even a fair comparison.

Ubik42

Of course Carlsen. Followed by Kramnik, Kasparov, Karpov, then perhaps Fischer.

einstein99

Lighting was.too bad though!

Kepp in mind by the time the Karpov match negotiations rolled around, Fischer had already quit chess for 3 years. We really don't know if he was scared of Karpov or what, but the fact is he was already 3 years into his retirement. I think he just lost the heart for it.

BestPiece

Chuck Norris.

Magnus would win on time as I doubt Fischer could move any pieces let alone his clock.

Carlsen will of course.

And he can play black in all the games as well! ;)

Fischer died a number of years ago and he is, at least in this writer's opinion, unable to press his clock.

If you are talking who is the best, you have to define at what ages you want to gauge them.

"But he also has the highest rating in history"

Not exactly true.

Fischer in at his peak, was virtually unbeatable. He won the 1970 Inerzonal with 3 1/2 points, something that was never done before, and I don't believe has even been accomplished since.

He beat Taimanov, and then Larsen, in the Candidates matches two of the best players at that time, by a combined score of 12-0. Unbelievable!

Fischer at that point, was rated over 2800. He actually LOST rating points when he won the World Chamionship in 1972.

"He also won more tournaments by 22 than Fischer did in his whole career."

Misleading.

One reason that Carlsen may have won more tournaments than Fischer is that there are far more tournaments now than 40 years ago. And Fischer often played without seconds. Fischer went entire months between tournaments, the same, except the Soviets, as most other players in that era.

Junior tournaments, or U18 tournaments were a rarity compared to today's time.

Fischer, if I am not mistaken, participated in only one junior tournament, the US Jr. Open. He always wanted to play the best players in the world. And the beginning, of course, he didn't win too many of them. But he kept getting better.

As for actually winning tournaments before that age of 22, your statement is oversimplified and misleading.

IM John Curdo lives in the US and has won over 800 tournaments in his lifetime, which is believed to be a world record. I do not know how many tournaments Curdo actually won by age of 22, but this seems like an abritary number. How many can Carlsen win before the age of 30? Why not make the age 50? Or how many total tournaments won in a lifetime? Going by what you said, this IM may be even better than Carlsen, certainly if we take a look at lifetime acheivements.

Hope this fills a few gaps in your knowledge about Fischer.

I know everyone makes a big deal of beating Taimanov and Larsen 6-0, and it was an impressive acheivement.

But do you really think either of them would stand much chance against Carlsen? Very likely he could repeat this performance.

If Carlsen played Spassky, I can scarce imagine Spassky winning a game off him, he won several against Fischer.

Fischer was a man of his time. A genius at chess, but he has since been eclipsed, several times over.

Close.

Because Carlsen is not the best player in chess history.  If that is the case, why were Fischer and Kasparov in the news so often while Carlsen is a relative unknown?

Dumb logic. Fischer was in the news because he was the first American, since Morphy, to win the world title.  Kasparov became an activist, and was well known for other reasons. Has nothing to do with whether or not they could beat Magnus.

This shows just how desperate Carlsen's managers are to exploit Carlsen's image to make a fast buck to cash in on those "fifteen minutes" before they end... now Carlsen's people are paying to play a chess game with Jay-Z and Beyonce in Havana.  I mean why would a World Chess champ by paying money just to be photographed with Jay Z?

Carlsen really needs to get his priorities straight and get some better people around him.

Source? Or just speculation?

True... I'm getting tired of all these stories of Carlsen racing Ferraris and throwing eggs at peoples' houses. Carlsen! Settle down!

Fischer threw away a game against spassky a 1300 could have drawn against him, and forfeited one, he either won or drew the rest in the world championships.

Spassky won 3 games, one was a forfeit.

Anand could not take any games from Carlsen in their match. I am pretty sure Spassky wouldn't either.

Also, Carlsen wouldnt lose one on forfeit :)

GMVillads

Carlsen (23) vs Fischer (23)? Carlsen would win of course. 50 years of opening theory and so on.

Mandy711

If Fischer and Carlsen is of the same age, equal access to chess knowledge, opening theory and databases, the most hardworking wins! Fischer wins!

varelse1

Carlsen would whoop Fischer, worse than Tokyo Airport Security did.

Carlsen is the best!

steve_bute

Thinking realistically ... Fischer would, being dead, flag on move 1 and lose on time. But, if he were not dead, he would complain about the lighting, flag on move 1 and lose on time.
