who is the best player of all times Anand or Karpov?

Ok,

Before Vishy, Karpov was the best player in history because he won the chess oscar during 9 years and his record in wins in chess tournaments. Besides Karpov was a world champion in 1975 after the fear of Fischer to face to the russian.

Anand  also won the chess oscar several times,  6.  He was the world champion and defended his crown with succeed ¡6 times! if my memory is good.   This guy is amazing,  and he only lost with Carlson 2 times becuase he was tired of always win.

Rumors say Karpov helped to Vishy in his WC Match vs Kramnik,  this would be a point in his favor.

Who do you think was the best in chess history ?

Karpov is superior he beat anand in a world championship match easily.

Kornnelsson only beat karpov when karpov was way past his prime. The best Karpov would beat Korrelsson.

Are you sure those 2 are the only ones who should be in the conversation? Nowadays people tend to be biased in favor of more recent champions, but you have to remember that they learned a lot from their predecessors from the late 1800s to early 1900s. So personally I tend to favor older champions who contributed more to the game.

As such, I think Max Euwe is better than both Karpov and Anand, and he is the best player of all time.

Karpov is inferior to Carlsen? I don't think so.

Morphy or Steintz for me.

Magnus is the most overrated chess player in history. He will fade in a few more years when he gets older and the younger generation catches up with him. He has had zero competition. They're all too old.

OAlienChessO

Yes, he is overrated, but the discussion about it is  here

SmyslovFan

Yes, it's true. Magnus Carlsen will eventually fade. He already is only the second player in history to have maintained a +2800 rating for two years. Of course he will eventually fade. In 2015 though, all of his opponents faded while he maintained his +2800 rating and had clearly the best year of any player in the world.

If Magnus has zero competition, it's because he's so far ahead of his competition, which would legitimize his rating. Logic seems to evade some people.

But yes, Magnus will fade. Time is still the undefeated all-time champion.

chessfreak

He will fade when wei yi gets older and destroys everyone.

he already fade when he draw with this beauty .    how you do you explain the Carlsen draw vs a girl   chessfreak?

How does the "world champion" and the apparent greatest player in the world draw to a literal nobody? Did he play without a queen?

lolurspammed

He still won the tournament. An IM drawing a top GM is hardly a huge upset. It's a draw, not a win. It's like if I drew a 2200.. not at all impossible.

Exactly he's the weakest world champion.

lolurspammed

His record highest rating and reign as world number one says otherwise. It seems as if he's expected to win every game even though no champion in history was ever that dominant.

Karpov did beat Anand in a FIDE world championship match, but that was after Karpov had lost to Short, who went on to lose to Kasparov in the PCA World Championship match. Karpov had an unfair advantage in that Anand had played several rounds of the tournament while Karpov was seeded in to play his first match against Anand. Karpov won after the match was drawn. It wasn't a blow-out.

Anand has a huge plus score against Karpov (11-5  with 29 draws in classical chess, and a larger edge in rapid chess).

Anand didn't give up after that match though. He worked on his game constantly. Vishy Anand's play against Kramnik a decade after his loss to Karpov was light years ahead of his play against Karpov.

In 1998, Anand was a distant third to Kasparov and Karpov. In 2008, Anand was the best player in the world. That match between Kramnik and Anand deserves better coverage. It was a match between two of the top ten players ever to play the game.

Of course, Anand is far behind both Kasparov and Carlsen. Carlsen convincingly crushed Anand twice in world championship matches, and Anand himself said that he was playing some of his best chess at the time!
