Just randomly sample the ratings AND games of people who've started all those zillions of whining-about-cheats posts.

May be they should give up chess and take up action video games. (Can one cheat at those? I have no idea)

CORRECTION and APOLOGY:

please read the title as -

why do whiner-patzers delude themselves that non-patzers are cheats?

I apologise for the mistaken title - soon as i sent this post i realised the title wasn't what i meant - i meant whiner-patzers not patzers! but there is no way to edit the title. Serious mistake, but unintentional.

I used to enjoy surfing on the side of Cinnibar Island if you catch my drift.  Ha!

In the interest of seriousness though... yeah this subject is getting seriously overdone.  I regard these topics as spam now

I predict that in the next few years the "Why do patzers think that non-patzers are cheats?" forums are going to become the new "Why do people cheat at chess?" forums.

I'm not sure Norma Jean, however I don't like it either.  People come on here claiming there has been an injustice done to them with absolutely no proof whatsoever to back up their claims.

More often than not, low level players mistaken better players for cheats, but that doesn't mean there are no cheats in chess.

Anyone have any cheat codes for Chess?  I have a couple; they're (up)(down)(right)(right), then "R-Y-B-K-A" on your keypad...  and the other one is (down)(down)(z-button), then "F-R-I-T-Z" on your keypad...

The point is, the next generation (kids 10-21) have grown up with the idea that "cheating" in games, especially video games, isn't necessarily cheating as we define it, but as an added bonus to games that are challenging, in order to make them accessible to players that wouldn't necessarily be able to beat those games.  Unfortunately, this has had the effect of making unfair play (a.k.a. cheating) rampant among a demographic that views the activity as something like a birthright.  I play many other games online besides chess, and it is amazing the lengths that kids will go to in order to get an advantage in their games.

I could site numerous examples, for instance in video games (in first-person shooters, with "wall hacks" and "aimbots", adventure games with "vac hacks" and "hacked items"), and even real-life games such as poker or blackjack, where cards are counted or manipulated, or bets are manipulated.  Then we have the Sporting community where athletes dope or take steroids, or use illegal equipment.  There are many cases of parents giving their kids drugs (like HGH or steroids) to turn them into "winners".  Or in Racing, where a 1/2 second advantage can mean the difference between winning and losing a race, and the cheating is not only limited to modifying cars illegally, but also comes in the form of scouting and spying on competitors (the recent Ferrari scandal).  The list goes on-and-on...

So what I'm trying to say is this:  patzers have come to view anyone who plays at a high level as suspicious.  That suspicion becomes even more prevalent with the easy accessibility of chess programs that are touted as playing at "the 3000 level and above", even when such a level requires maintenence of the opening books, at least some tactical knowledge, and a great many games to be played.  Is cheating rampant in chess?  Some people would say it is (the "Cheater_1" fiasco here pointed that out) while others would dismiss it as paranoia.  Here's my take on the issue:  cheating is something that you will encounter in every endeavor of life, and it will become ever more widespread as cheaters find better and easier ways to cheat.  What will make the difference is how you, yourself, handle these situations.  You can either choose to play with integrity and honor in spite of the cheaters, or you can stoop to the level of the cheaters.  Or you can just ignore the issue altogether, and play the game to the best of your ability and not worry about what other people are doing.

As silentfilmstar13 says, it's worse than that. Whiners are often equal-opportunity, accusing both patzers and non-patzers alike of being cheats! Perhaps it's partially the shock of how strong chess players can become. A 1000-rated player is used to regularly beating all their friends, but online they will lose most of their games.

I know of several players who have been banned from other sites, after having been accused of cheating, and then started playing elsewhere (or at least the same names/handles have with very similar profiles).

I have played just over 1,000 online 'correspondence' games (across several sites)  and have only been suspicious of maybe 3 of my opponents play (I have lost all 5 or 6 games where I had doubts of course).

I have found some players seem to play considerably better in Online Tournaments (as in, I played this 'guy' in a 'friendly' and felt I won comfortably but now I'm struggling) I put that down to better concentration (less blunders) on my opponents part with a greater incentive - Tournament victory.

So I suppose in short I'm sure cheating online exists, but I have had very little cause to suspect cheating in the games I have played.

Very good point.

As has been said chess is easy to learn but hard to master.  Perhaps people who are new to or less serious about the game (only play casually don't study) don't realize that there are people out here, even class players, who devote a serious amount of time to studying the game: opening, middlegame, endgame, strategy, tactics you name it, just like studying a musical instrument.

I'm sure cheater_1 would say: "Everyone cheats, at least I'm being honest" but I seriously doubt that (and hope it's not true!... But who cares? It's just for fun anyways, and so as long as you make sure you don't cheat (really the only thing you have control over)... it should be good enough (if only everyone did that...)

:((((((((((((((((

I`m a 1000 rated player, and I don`t even know what a patzer meens!!! :(((

I`m glad someone compared chess to a musical instrument, couse I play the piano :D lol

Well, I know how hard it is to master the piano, in oposition to how hard it is to master it, since I`m just now starting to understand what it means to master the piano.

Taking the metafore further, the piano can be played by a machine with much more precision than by a man... that is, eletronic music has been gaining terrein for decades now. Still the coldness of a computer generated song is unmistekanly felt by any one who truly knows and enjoy music. The drums are an even better example, since the variety of touches a good drumer can do with his whirsts is as limitles as his emotions, wile the computer can only repeat the exact same sound when it`s ordered to.

Well... Maybe that`s the key to honestly suspect of a cheater: they lack creativity, feeling and passion. Some of the games I`ve lost are the most beautyful I`ve seen, and there ya go. Please tell me it`s bullshit if you, top rated players desagree with me, but, is any computer generated game beatyfull? ANY??

When people say "patzer" they generally mean a weak player. According to this interesting article discussing it's etymology, it specifically means one who blunders and may also imply the blunderer believes they're better than they really are.

"there is no way to edit the title."

Actually, all you had to do was delete your first post and the thread would have vanished. Then you could have re-created it with your preferred title.
