I notice how far technology has come, will it soon become impossible to catch cheaters because of new technology, hence, making the game not worth playing?

I sick and tired of thinking that my opponent could be a cheater because he could be! That's why I love real life tournaments, such a great atmosphere!

Senator-Blutarsky

I can't argue with you there.

Played many 950 tactics trainer and about 1800 blitz rating opponents ?

Senator-Blutarsky

pass.

Senator-Blutarsky

because it's all bishop moves.

netzach

He has no head.

If organizers were at all serious about prevention, I don't think technology will help cheaters much.  I'd guess the most reliable way to cheat should still be a low tech system involving accomplices who signal moves.

In any case, cheating has always been a possibility.  It hasn't killed chess yet, and frankly I don't see technology forcing a big difference in the future.

If technolongy decides to make an effort there could be a point in time where chess will be nothing but draws but that would be very difficult to achieve.

@wafflemaster check out the following article spawned no doubt as a result of the fiasco of Borislav Ivanov's alleged cheating. If this has a serious possibility of happening in FIDE sanctioned events, the only question is how long before it impacts USCF events too?

http://www.chessbase.com/Home/TabId/211/PostId/4010396/anti-cheating-measures--the-discussion-continues-090713.aspx

Ivanov wasn't the first.  Cheating has already happened in USCF events, and before Ivanov was even born.

I remember this article.  He says it's fairly easy to solve with his 5 part rule.  I think those are unrealistic though.

But even more basic than his searches by medical staff.  They still allow electronic recording devices.  Some still allow phones.  In top level events positions of the games are broadcast live.

It's premature to talk about cheating as the death of chess when, from my point of view, there hasn't even been a token effort to prevent cheating yet... which is the upside of the Ivanov case.  He was so blatant that he got the federations and organizers (and even players) to think about this very old issue.

@666AAA666 what I meant was that technology will ruin chess by making it unable to be enjoyed Ex: Cheating in competition. Once it becomes easier to avoid getting caught, thanks to technological advances......................

Cheating methods already run... Judges have to take care. Like in track there are ways to detect doping, something similar need to exist in chess.

In every single sport doping is endemic. It's not even funny how blatant it is. The only reason it survives is that there still is competition between drugged up athletes, while 2 guys playing Rybka vs Houdini will always be a boring draw.

ChezBoy

Agreed.

ChezBoy

I dont think so.

You don't think they check ears, or you don't think it's easy to insert a bug in there?

Hadron

In a word, no.

ChezBoy

Not those things.

@666AAA666 Never have I seen any such "bugs" except for in movies. I don't think cheating is that sophisticated yet...................

If u seen them in movies(I guess James Bond) why do u think that some world champions wont use them too?

U said wired?? hey, we live in 2013, everything can be wireless.

not to mention that you can bribe the tournament organizers for some other sleek way of cheating.

I ones saw a documentary about a russian kid on the street he said:

you can buy everything with money and what you can not buy, you can buy for more money.

I think that holds true especially for chess, wasnt the fide president arrested for some corruption affair??

irontigran1

Will it ruin chess? It has already, there is no work ethic, just pop in a CD and you're off. Technology is a curse to chess.

not necessarily the world championship but it would be possible i suppose.

TetsuoShima

i wont bribe anyone but i believe it would be possible. I have yet to see a place  where corruption doesnt exist
