Account Hack - Moderator Help Please!

Sort:

So, someone got into my account, did some things like changed profile picture and add notes, but he also played a bunch of chess games and auto-resigned each one. If you check my games every single one is a loss and I've played like 30 games today, though none were me. So could a moderator possibly reset my chess elo to the default one at least. I really don't want to go from 800 elo to 1200 or 1300 elo. Espeically since I didn't lose those games.

How someone got into your account?

RonaldJosephCote

It was probably purchased at Best Buy or Home Depot

I cannot understand what it means...sorry

Dude I've lost 30 games in a row too. It's cool

Yah win some yah lose some

hahahahahahahahahahaha   thanks for the compliment. I can't understand half my post eitherLaughing

I don't think it would be possible to reset your Elo to the default - it would be calculated based on all the games in the database. If they deleted those games, that would affect all of your opponent's Elo as well.

I wouldn't get too upset about your rating anyway: it's just a number, and if you take control back of your account, it should come back to normal soon enough: the Elo rating apaprently has some feature that spots these sorts of anomalies and returns your rating to its normal level more quickly than what you had to do in the first place.

No I'm a high school student and I know who did it. Talked to him about it, he just said he didn't do anything serious and he won't get in trouble, and how it's just a bit of elo in chess and I shouldn't be upset at him about it. While it is true, going up 400 to 500 elo is grindy and slow, and while I enjoy playing chess, playing against weaker opponents isn't very fun.

He used a man in the middle attack which intercepted my passwords and information I entered that day. I didn't really log on to anything concerning or worth hacking (school online textbook), but I guess he found a chess website I used and decided it would be funny.

And yeah I probably won't get it reset and I can see why, and I guess I should be able to return to my normal elo somewhat quickly.

I think I would be tempted to employ the Kick in the Bollocks Counter-Attack.

Afterwards claiming that I haven't done anything serious and that I won't get in trouble. Afterall, it's just a bit of tingling in a couple of extremities, and he shouldn't be upset by it.

You know who your REAL friends are when you leave your password un-attended.Frown

Why don't you ask a strong player to hack your account for a few days?

RonaldJosephCote

I'm pretty sure you're assuming the methods that he used and that you're probably incorrect (both the method, and what he said) *wink wink*

This is criminal behavior - even if it's true that he didn't get anything of real worth from you he might just have tested a method that he will employ against others as well.

You should not take this lightly - not sure you can make legal trouble about this successfully but you should at least talk to his teachers about it and raise a stink about that hacking.

Make sure none of your sensitive information shares the same password as those things he hacked, even if you didn't log into it that day.

I hope your email account does not have the same password as your chess account...

I wouldn't be happy with anyone who stole my passwords. If I were you, I'd change all of my passwords that were compromised. (And no monkey, password, or 123456)

Also, did he explain exactly how he pulled off the man-in-the-middle attack, and more importantly, could he do it again, either to you or someone else?

I guess it depends whether he's a friend and whether you think he'd repeat the "funny" hack. I'd consider reporting him.

One added thought. If the MITM attack was possible due to system vulnerabilities, then the system isn't secure, and you should report the shortcomings to the proper authorities so they can fix the system, even if you choose not to report the culprit.
