Filter out any post that contains the words "first", "second", "third", "fourth", or "fifth" in the daily puzzle thread.  Simple enough.

Do forum moderators have the ability to delete posts? This is probably asking too much of moderators, but maybe people will get the idea that "first" is not valuable contribution to the site if it gets deleted fairly regularly.

I know, I obviously wasn't being 100% serious.  I know there's always a way around stuff like this, and it does kind of restrict free speech. :P

It IS annoying as hell though.  Why do people feel so cool if they have the first post?  Must not have an exciting life if that's such an awesome accomplishment... :\

I think it can be handled socially -- if the rest of the community publicly chastises the folks who clutter the puzzle threads with this nonsense when they do so, eventually, I would hope, people will stop doing it.

it's a slippery slope for sure. what if someone says:

"first!

this was a great puzzle - thank you!"

do we then have to edit it to remove the "first"?

meh. not worth the hassle.

And I of course agree.  Just spreading a little humor. :)

If some people think it is fun be have the first post on a topic that will be highly viewed, then more power to them...I doubt they are trying to annoy anybody and if its a way to make certaian people more involved...

Shamus Young at Twenty Sided solved that problem at his site by, for some time, ALWAYS making the first comment on his own posts.  He usually altered it somewhat and made it funny.  After a while, no one bothered trying to make the first post, he stopped doing it, and the problem hasn't arisen again.

That article from The Onion was hilarious. Now, I'm going to make my retarded comment and watch the replies, whilst calling everyone gay.

Here's my suggestion: eliminate the existence of numbers from not only this website, but from the entire world. The world doesn't need numbers! Come on - I have no relevance to numbers! 1 = 2457f67ffj to me! I mean come on, seriously! My teachers have the nerve to give me that 99 instead of 100 (especially my math teacher!!!), and then I have to conform to numbers? Heck no! Eliminate all numbers, permanently!!! Then, no first's second's, third's, etc.!!!

No numbers = no problems, ever! =P
