Thanks for mentioning that great movie Javan64 ! I've seen it a couple of times and it is a very good film. I think that Alec Guinness had fun there as he got to play a very interesting role.

Alec Guinness was in Bridge on the River Kwai, wasn't he? I enjoyed that movie. Haven't seen Tunes of Glory, though.

Thanks for the post Corrijean. Yes Alec played the British Colonel in " Bridge On The River Kwai " and that was one of his best known roles. He also played Prince Fisal in " Lawrence Of Arabia " among many roles, I gather that he liked to keep busy. Younger people may remember him best from the " Star Wars " movies where he played Obywankinobie ( sorry I mangled the spelling ). In the first " Star Wars " movie he enters the story when he rescues Luke Skywalker from the Sand people, using his Light-sabre in that instance.

I've seen all of those, but I never strung them together, somehow. Interesting info.

I think that my favourite Alec Guinness role would be when he played a master spy in two Mini-series based on books by John Le Carr'e. The series were " Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy " and " Smiley's People " and these are my favourite Spy films now as well.

Sometimes I hear something on the news that brings an old film to mind. There was an item yesterday about the Russians at the UN and it took me back to a funny movie entitled " The Russians Are Coming The Russians Are Coming ". The movie takes place during the Cold War and has a great cast. Brian Keith, Johnathan Winters, Carl Reiner, Alan Arkin, Paul Ford and many others have a lot of fun with the paranoia in the USA about the Russians back over 40 years ago.

Thanks for the post, sorry I don't remember that movie at all. Perhaps one of the other vistors to this thread knows the title.

Mr Frost?

Thanks for the recent posts. I went over to Youtube and found the trailer there for " Mr.Frost " with Jeff Goldbloom. I think that must be quite a interesting movie, and certainly scary as well. Jeff Goldbloom is a good Actor whom I first remember from " The Big Chill ", which was done early in his career.

Well I've just been going thru some of the forums here and I noticed that someone had just seen the " Luzhin Defence " movie and they liked it a lot. Certainly it is a very good movie, however so is " Searching For Bobby Fischer " and I would have a hard time trying to choose which of those two films that I like better as far as Chess movies are concerned.

Well I need some info today from someone who is up to date on new-tech stuff. For several years now I have been using a Video player that has seperate compartments for DVDs and for VHS tapes. However after gradually going downhill the DVD side of the player has quit working. I would like to upgrade to a Blue-ray player but a question has come up. I have a fair number of the old-style discs here and I have been told that the new Blue-ray Video players can also play the old-style of DVDs as well as the new format. So anyway has anyone used the Blue-ray player on old-style DVDs by any chance ?

We were recently in the same situation and just decided to get a computer to hook up to the television instead of getting a dvd or blue-ray player.

Since we got our HD flat screen TV about 6 months ago, we (meaning me) just had to get a Blu Ray player as well.  Yes it plays the regular old-style DVDs as well, In fact, although Blue Ray disks are supposed to look better, I can't really tell a difference when playing the old DVDs...both types look better.

I am not a big fan of cinema and telvision, but indisputably, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Citizen Kane are two of the top greatest films in American popular culture history.

Everyone Thanks for the posts and for the info. I would like to keep playing the DVDs that I've got around here so I guess that I should look at a Blue-ray player. With this question re Videos I had been thinking back well over 25 years to my first VHS player. The thought of buying my own Movies and Documentaries plus being able to rent Movies was a big deal at the time. I've still got piles of VHS tapes around here as well as two tape players but I guess the time will come when the VHS tapes will be useful only as paperweights  lol.

I recently saw 'The fantastic mr. fox' and found that rather fun.

Thanks for the recent posts, we are getting good info on great films.

In my thread about Machines we just brought up some info on Atlantic ocean-liners. This brought to mind a interesting Frank Sinatra film entitled " Assault On A Queen " where a gang of crooks finds a intact U-boat and uses it to steal some cash from the crew of the Queen Mary. It was a well made movie even tho the script was a bit odd. Virna Lisa was also featured in the film and one wonders why she was seen so rarely in Hollywood movies ( I gather that she was better known in Europe ). Frank Sinatra made quite a variety of movies of course, one of my favourites is the lesser known " Von Ryan's Express ", which also featured the great Trevor Howard.

Javan64

Most people just think of Sinatra's singing & forget his excellent acting.  I really liked Von Ryan's Express but my favorite flick of his would be The Manchurian Candidate.  It beats the remake all to pieces!  Angela Lanbury was so evil in it as well.
