Format - Part 2

Sort:

In Part 1 I described how it is decided how big the groups are and how many advances in the groups. In part 2 I will explain how the pairings are made afterwards and I will illustrate it with an example, but I'll start with an important note.

note: There might be adjustments to:

  1. Prevent teams to face eachother at different rounds
  2. Prevent winners from the previous round to face eachother if the 2nd place teams advanced in the previous round as well.
  3. Prevent the same teams to be put into bigger groups for several rounds.

If we assume we have 14 teams remaining. Then we should pair groups with this format

14 teams Teams divided in groups of 3 (4 in two groups).
Top 2 teams advance

and let's assume below are the teams remaining

Team Rating Win Loss Draw Points
1 team A 1900 2 1 1 5
2 team B 1800 2 1 1 5
3 team C 1700 1 0 3 5
4 team D 1600 3 1 0 6
5 team E 1500 4 0 0 8
6 team F 1400 4 0 0 8
7 team G 1300 3 0 1 7
8 team H 1201 3 1 0 6
9 team J unrated 4 0 0 8
10 team K unrated 3 1 0 6
11 team I unrated 2 1 1 5
12 team L 1199 3 1 0 6
13 team M 1000 3 1 0 6
14 team N 900 2 0 2 6

As we can see I have sorted the teams based on their Vote Chess ELO Rankings. This is because the pairings will be based on these ratings (not their points from previous round). Also unrated teams will be treated like they had 1200 rating. When putting these teams into the groups they will be paired like this

  Group 1 1 2 3 4
1 team A X B W W
2 team E W X B W
3 team I B W X B
4 team M B B W X

  Group 2 1 2 3 4
1 team B X B W W
2 team F W X B W
3 team J B W X B
4 team N B B W X

  Group 3 1 2 3
1 team C X
2 team G   X
3 team K     X

  Group 4 1 2 3
1 team D X
2 team H   X
3 team L     X

When there are 2 or 3 teams in a group they will play 2 games/opponent while if it is 4 or 5 teams in a group they will play 1 game/opponent. When it is 2 games/opponent it will be one game with each color and when it is 1 game/opponent it will be specified what team plays black or white. In the diagram I have pointed out who is black/white by adding "W" for white or "B" for black. For example team A is supposed to play black against team E and white against team I and team M. The format for what color each team will have will always look that way for group sizes of 4. If we assume the teams A,B,C,D and E would play in a group size of 5 in the future (could rarely happen) the pairings would look like this

  Group 1 1 2 3 4 5
1 team A X W B W B
2 team B B X W B W
3 team C W B X W B
4 team D B W B X W
5 team E W B W B X

Although this is a good way to illustrate to get an overview of the pairings and colors I will prefer to do it looking like it does in CSC 2013 round 1. In our group size with 5 teams I would present it like this

Team Rating Win Loss Draw Points
1 team A 1900 3  0 1 7
2 team B 1800 3 1  0 6
3 team C 1700 1 1 2 4
4 team D 1600 0 2 2 2
5 team E 1500 0 3 1 1

Points: Win = 2, Draw = 1, Loss = 0, Time loss = -1

Group 1 games:

Game 1: team A VS team B

Game 2: team C VS team A

Game 3: team A VS team D

Game 4: team E VS team A

Game 5: team B VS team C

Game 6: team D VS team B

Game 7: team B VS team E

Game 8: team C VS team D

Game 9: team E VS team C

Game 10: team D VS team E

One last thing is that the pairings will be made differently in the semi-finals. Then the highest rated will be paired with the lowest rated, second highest against the second lowest and so fourth. As an illustation let's say 6 teams are playing in the semi final. Then the pairings would look like this.

  Group 1 1 2 3
1 team A X
2 team D   X
3 team F     X

  Group 2 1 2 3
1 team B X
2 team C   X
3 team E     X

I think that was all I wanted to share about the format. Feel free to comment the format if there's something you don't understand or want to say weather you think the format I have made is good or if it should be improved in some way.
