Greetings Chess.com University Members!

 

I am thrilled to announce the first single-day seminar of 2014:

Chess 101: The Game of Chess

 

Level: This seminar is aimed at novices and those who have never participated in a rated OTB chess tournament.

When:  Saturday, January 25th, 2014 at 1:00 PM PST.

Format: The seminar consists of a live, interactive 1-hour session broadcasted using LiveStream.

Class Size: 25 to 100 students.

 

Course Description:

Are you new to chess? Have you always played online and don't know anything about over-the-board tournaments? Do you need help in understanding the fundamentals of the game? Have you not figured out the mystery surrounding en passant? Do you lack knowledge of basic chess vocabulary? Not sure how to record your games using chess notation? Not sure how to reach 1200 ELO strength? If so, this seminar is for you!
 
Topics covered:
 
1) Rules of chess.
2) Algebraic chess notation.
3) Chess tournament basics and etiquette (yes, we will discuss touch-move too).
4) Winning elementary endgames such as king and queen vs. king.
5) Basic summary of chess principles.
6) Chess vocabulary.
7) Chess books, software, engines, etc.
8) Advice for parents wanting their children to learn chess.
This seminar is designed to cover the very basics and introduce new players to the world of chess. This seminar will also be useful for parents of youth chess players.
Additionally, Chess 101 serves the purpose of introducing new Chess.com University members to our teaching format. If you ever wondered how a Chess.com University seminar works, this is your chance to find out.
Hence, you may want to attend Chess 101 even if the material is too basic for you, especially if you qualify for a FREE entry!
