So Wins 7th Blitz "Death Match"!

  • IM DanielRensch
  • on 7/30/12, 3:59 PM.

Grandmaster Wesley So jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead against Grandmaster Ray Robson in Chess.com's 7th Blitz Death Match, and he never looked back! In arguably the most lopsided Death Match yet, the Filipino #1 dominated the entire match, finishing with a plus score in all three time control "sets", ultimately winning by a final tally of 23 to 9.

Robson admitted heading into the match that he knew So would be considered the favorite by most, and Ray worried he was not heading into the Death Match in "his best form". So proved him right, continuing his current hot streak (So has won the last two international tournaments he's competed in, and nears his all time highest FIDE Rating of almost 2680) by running away with the match.

Though IM's Rensch and Pruess (who covered the match live on Chess.com/TV) agreed that the match was played at a high level by both players as far as chess moves are concerned, the obvious difference in the match was So's ability to consistently gain and maintain large time advantages. Robson could not avoid time pressure in what seemed like every game, consistently misplaying still "roughly equal positions" with much less time than his opponent.

Grandmaster Wesley So thanked his countrymen for all their support after the match

Both players were "class acts" following the final game in their respective "post match interviews", thanking Chess.com for the opportunity. Robson requested another opportunity to compete in a Death Match for a chance at redemption, while So said he is looking forward to a "winners elimination event" of some kind.

Here are some of the more interesting games from yesterday's Death Match:

yeah, honestly, i'm surprised, bc nobody else has ever reported ads every 60 seconds. it should be more like 1 15-second ad per 5-15 minutes. i wish someone else would chime in on what they experience, to compare to yours.

No John (THETUBESTER) -- you misunderstood.

You WILL see ads on ALL shows that are open to ALL Members. Shows that are only open to Premiums (regular shows) will not have ads. Shows that are open to Basic (ALL) Members, will have ads.

BUT again, if you download Google Chrome and get Ad Blocker https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gighmmpiobklfepjocnamgkkbiglidom then you won't see ads on the Basic Shows either...

    Hope that makes sense...

@THETUBESTER -- Free shows on Chess.com/tv (usually those are once a month for the regular shows and all the "BIG" ones like Death Matches -- because we want basic members to get a chance to see those great events) are done through livestream.com/chesscomlive -- NOT the regular Chess.com/TV Channel.

And according to Livestream's functionality, those shows will show ads (shows open only to premium members like yourself do not have ads).

Now, if you use Google Chrome and simply download "AdBlock" which is an easy and free add on (you can Google it and it will come right up as an "Ad-On" you will never have to see those ads Wink!!!

Great job Wesley! You make us proud. I really enjoyed your deep tactical calculations and surprises.  I hope you do get to fully develop your great talent and potential under GM Susan Polgar and her chess institute, and challenge for the world championship one day. Many Filipino athletes like Manny Pacquiao under Freddie Roach's tutelage get to develop much more while training in the United States. SmileMore power to you and God bless

heidt, it's hard to know in advance how good various people will be at this format, since they have never played it before. all the other matches have been closer than this.

the way players are chosen for the death matches is usually just Danny and I picking match-ups that we think would be interesting.

this is a tremendously impressive result ... I think it shows the difference between a "super GM" and an up and coming GM.  I was floored by So's speed and accuracy in this match ... he's on his way to greatness no doubt about it.
