Chess 212: Opening Repertoire for Intermediate Players Part 2
Hi chess friends!
It’s about time to announce my next Chess.com University seminar!
Chess 212: Opening Repertoire for Intermediate Players Part 2
Level: This seminar is aimed at players rated between 1200 and 1600 ELO and is also recommended for higher-rated players who don’t have an opening repertoire.
When: Saturday, September 29th, 4:30 PM Pacific Time
Format: The total seminar duration will be 2 hours and 15 minutes with two 1-hour sessions that are separated by a 15-minute break.
Course Description:
Do you sometimes find yourself in an inferior or even lost position in the opening? Are you not sure which set of openings you should know at the intermediate level? Would you like to have a strong, solid opening repertoire which does not require memorizing thousands of variation? If you can answer 'yes' to any of those questions or simply want to learn more openings, the “Opening Repertoire for Intermediate Players” series is for you!
Beginners and intermediate players are often advised to mostly study tactics and basic endgames but this doesn’t mean the opening phase should be ignored! It only means that devoting a majority of your time to opening study is wrong. Understanding opening principles and knowing a few basic openings is enough for beginners. For intermediate players who want to improve their chess, it is crucial they achieve proficiency in all phases of the game, including openings. Sometimes intermediate players try to learn openings from detailed opening books but even this isn’t productive as most of those books are designed for expert level players! Generally, it’s the advanced players who focus on creating a complete opening repertoire but for intermediate players, this isn’t necessary. What intermediate players need is a simple concise opening repertoire which can guide them safely to the middlegame and teach them more about chess itself.
The move I recommend white to play is this series is 1.e4. In Chess 211 (the first seminar in this series) I covered 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 from White’s point of view. The Petrov Defense, Philidor’s Defense, Two Knight’s Defense, Giuoco Piano Classical Variation, Hungarian Defense, Latvian Gambit, and the Rousseau Gambit were covered last time.
This seminar, Chess 212, will cover the Scandinavian Defense (Center-Counter Defense) from White’s point of view. A solid concise repertoire for White against 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 and 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 will be taught in this seminar.
