Minecraft: Admins
There's been a lot of talk about adminship recently. Just some things I wanted to point out, so you don't have to comb through the notes:
- In the end, all adminship boils down to is a fancy badge. Your only new power is the ability to post news and send match requests. Given that this is mostly a discussion group, the latter isn't likely to be used much, so you really only have one new feature as an admin that can easily be fulfilled through forum posts. Now, I'm happy to promote anyone who has a good idea for an ongoing series to admin, but unless you've got a smashing idea there's really no point. And feel free to make use of the forums without being an admin!
- You can now ask for adminship through notes. It's just easier due to the redesign; we used to have a rule saying you couldn't ask for admin through the notes, since we were flooded with said requests; but it's easier to just delete spam notes while keeping good ideas, now that there's one concrete entrance requirement.
- If you can make another Minecraft group active, you can make this one active. Advertising aside, if you have a secret formula for getting a Minecraft group to its full potential, try it out here! We may not be as active as we were in our heyday, but we're still alive. Part of the problem is that Minecraft isn't as popular as it used to be, and while it's still a popular game keep in mind we're on a Chess website. The niche of being a chess player and a Minecraft player is small, and easy to lose; people who formerly played chess or Minecraft will probably stop being active if they stop playing either. That doesn't mean that this group can't resurge, though. Once again, I'm always open to ideas!
- Maturity is a factor in being considered for adminship. Related to the "fancy badge" bullet point, being an Admin is a primarily social function. You represent an authority in the group; not only do you have power (incredibly minimal but it's existent), it's also a token of favor from me and the group as a whole. If you're not being mature, even if you have a great idea I'm going to be reluctant to promote you. Nobody's perfect: if I remember correctly, vast swathes of tactics trainer pages are filled with random crap from me (well, not all of it is from me specifically, but some of it is), and I'm a pretty goofy guy, but things like spamming the notes, being churlish, or being a jerk is not going to improve my disposition towards you. Constructive criticism is perfectly fine, but things like throwing fits about not being an admin (which was common in our heyday and was the reason we had an "ask to be an admin" forum and a points system) are a no-no. You're all big boys and girls (in spirit if not in age), so use your common sense; and don't be afraid to reach out to me if you feel you're being misunderstood!
- I'm considering replacement Super-admins. Short history lesson! pain_191 founded the group, and while we were in our infancy I was selected to be his second, helping him run the group, but as he moved on to other things I came to be a sort of replacement; while he was our honorary figurehead I ran the group for him and made it active. But everyone has personal lives and problems, and after a few years of running the group I passed the torch to our very own tonyzhao, who at the time was selected as a replacement for a different Minecraft group (Redstone Powered) along with myself, and was the most active member aside from myself. Tonyzhao ran the group wonderfully, for a time, but his own life has caught up to him and I haven't seen him active in a while. Now that I'm in the driver's seat again, I realize that we need backup options; pain was onto something with the 2-SA system. Super-admins fulfill the extremely important function of member management, and while adminship is mostly a figurehead not having the ability to ban or promote people is a serious handicap on any self-respecting group. Therefore, keep in mind I'll be examining members for exceptional service, so be on your best behaviour!
That's everything I have to say for now. Thanks for being a part of the community!
