ROCK ROOKS CHESS CLUB

MINUTES

Thursday, October 9, 2008  ~  12:30 PM  ~  UW-Rock County Library

Attendance:  Charles Aldrich (Vice-President), Brian Beecher (Advisor), Paul Bordner (Temple Elect), John Collins, Jordan Hartwig (Treasurer), Ryan Hauri, Megan Lueck, Melissa Lueck (Secretary), Josiah Stone (President).

2. Meeting called to order at 12:40 p.m.

5. Old Business.       
   1. Money surplus from refunded chess table.

                                                              i.      Clocks, books, wood/marble chess pieces, trophy, guest lecturer, food for tournament.

   1. Nick French’s Opening Lecture.

                                                              i.      Brian will find out when Nick is available.  Nick will speak about openings which involve the King-pawn.  Brian will book the large lecture hall for a Thursday noon-hour lecture (date TBD).  Someone will need to make posters about the lecture (Melissa?).  Brian will set up the DGT board and video tape; a DVD will be made and kept at the library.  A video stream of the lecture may be archived and made available from our UW-Rock homepage (we will notify our chess.com members so they can watch it too).

   1. USCF Master/Life Master Pete Webster Lecture Series.

                                                              i.      Brian will contact Pete and see how much a 4-5 part lecture series would cost the club.  This 4-5 part (1-hr. each lecture) could be done during the evening or at another time Pete is available.  Brian will talk with Pete about recording the series and possibly making it accessible through streaming video.  Proposed topics could consist of middle game tactics, basic strategies, combinations, and end games.

   1. Chess.com

                                                              i.      Increased participation through chess.com; up to 21 online members.  Discussion of the chess.com tournaments.  The first tournament is almost over and the second tournament is nearly 75-percent complete.  A third tournament will begin soon.  Brian will see if the meeting minutes can be posted.

1. New Business.
   1. Challenge Janesville Craig High School to a chess tournament/fun day.
   2. Fun day challenge for chess club members.  An email will be sent out to see what time is best.  We could hold the tournament in the library sometime after thanksgiving.
