NEW: Tablebases available in Analysis
Hey, Team Beta!
Tablebases are now available through Chess.com/analysis or at the end of your games when you run a Game Report. Tablebases tell you with absolute certainty which moves win, lose, and draw for any position with seven or fewer pieces on the board. This resource will appear in a Tablebase tab that replaces the typical Openings tab when you have a position with an appropriate number of pieces. Click on a move to see the full line so you can more easily learn how to push for a win or hold a draw. Use tablebases to study complicated endgames and analyze games like the pros.
Tablebases recently took center stage as Fabiano Caruana battled Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the 2021 portion of the FIDE Candidate Tournament. Caruana uncorked all-time great opening preparation against MVL in the Poisoned Pawn variation of the Najdorf Sicilian. MVL responded with precision found himself in a drawn position, according to tablebases, after 44...Nxc6. However, Caruana kept up the pressure and was able to capitalize on small mistakes to break through MVL's defense and ultimately win the game.
The complexity of the endgame led match commentators--including World Champion Magnus Carlsen--to consult tablebases in order to understand why some defensive plans would hold while others would fail. Take a look through the game yourself and see if you can learn something from a game widely considered to be an instant classic!
