WLN October Update: Did you know?

Did you know that chess.com hosts the largest chess tournament in the world? It is called Chess.com World League. There are over 88 teams participating in WL 2011 with overall 34524 players. However,that is hardly 1% of all members in chess.com. Everyday player all over the world join this competitive and joyful tournament. 

Top story of the month: World League News has been established. What is WLN? It is or will be a "news agency" of the WL & WC. Every month, there will be a news post about the updates and developments in Chess.com World League and World Cup. 

Team Russia is currently leading Div. A with 863 members. Team Romania, last season champions, is following Team Russia in second position with 491 members. Team Indonesia is holding the third position with only 341 players. Champions of 2009, Team England (572 members), is in ninth position. The largest team, Team India with 4317 members are in eighteenth position. Indian Marauders follow Team India in members with 2769 players, but they are in Div. C holding the third position.

Team Croatia is leading Div. B with 488 members. Team USA: NE is following Team Croatia in second position with 571 players. Team USA: NE is the largest one of the six USA teams. Team Slovakia is in third position with 255 members. The largest group in Div. B, Team Philippines, with 1212 members is holding the fifth position. The second largest team in Div. B and fifth largest in WL, Team Malaysia, with 1104 members is in the eighteenth position. Team Portugal, the smallest in Div. B, with 121 members is holding the tenth position.

Team Ukraine is leading Div. C with 427 members. Followed by Team Argentina with 202 members. The third position is held by the largest team in Div. C and the second largest in WL, Indian Marauders. Team Iceland, the smallest in C, is holding the nineteenth position with eighty eight members.

Team Albania is on top of Div. D with 182 members. Team Austria is in second position with 96 members. Team Moldova is holding the third position with 121 members. Team Wales, the largest in Div. D, is in sixth position with 223 members. The smallest team, Team Nicaragua, with 20 members is in twelfth position. 

Team Nigeria is leading Div. E with 178 members. TRNC is holding the second position with 110 members. Team Pakistan, the largest in the division, is holding the third position with 601 members. Team Uruguay, smallest in the division, is in ninth position. 

These results are based on five rounds of WL 2011 from the latest update on September 29, 2011. 

In round five, 3150 players participated in the matches. That is 9.1% of total members (34524) in the participating groups. 1722 players out of 14398 participated in Div. A which is about 12% of total members in Div. A. In Div. B, 714 players participated which is 10.1% of 8039 members registered in Div. B. 396 players out of 7665 participated in Div. C which is 5.2% of the total members in Div. C. 174 of 2183 players participated in Div. D; that is about 8% of the total members in Div D. 144 of 2239 members participated in Div. E which is about 6.4% of total members in Div. E. The ranking of most participants by % is as follows:

  1. Div. A 12%  (1722 of 14398) {-2% from R4}
  2. Div. B 10.1% (714 of 8039) {-0.4% from R4}
  3. Div. D 8% (174 of 2183) {-0.4% from R4}
  4. Div. E 6.4% (144 of 2239) {+0.6% from R4}
  5. Div. C 5.2% (396 of 7665) {+0.2% from R4}

World Cup 2010 has progressed to its final stage. The final stage will start by November 13th, 2011. The tournament started with 39 teams in December of 2009. Now, there are only four teams left and one of them will declare a champion.

Team Catalonia, after long battles, have reached the final stage with two ties and two wins. They tied against Team Italy and Team Russia and won over Team Slovenija and Team Mexico. Team Italy, also from Division A, has made it to the final stage with the same results as Catolina, two wins and two ties. 

Team Canada tied for first place with Team Turkey in Div. B; however, Team Canada earned more tiebreak points and has advanced to the final stage with two wins and two ties. They beat Indian Marauders and Team Iraq and tied against Team Turkey and Team England. 

Team Slovakia, who knocked out Team Australia, American Group, Team Iran and Team Bangladesh from Div. C, has advanced to final stage. They achieved a win over Team Australia, American Group, Team Bangladesh and a tie against Team Iran. They ranked as the top team in stage two with 3.5 points. 

The next season of World Cup is starting on January, 2012. The registrations are already open.
