Results from April 4

The first Sac Pawn Storm tournament went off without a hitch this afternoon. Twelve players competed for five rounds and nobody escaped undefeated. After the storm calmed, the following players stood on the podium:

• =1st NM fpawn (Michael) with 4.0
• =1st Mossyhorn (Conrad) with 4.0
• =3rd WFM nicecream18 (Kimberly) with 3.5
• =3rd J3Chess24 (Javier) with 3.5
• Top U1600 USCF nvisel (Nicholas) with 3.0

Already in round 1, nvisel announced his presence by outdueling the higher rated vish1080 in a queen endgame with passed pawns on both flanks.

Continuing with the upset theme, WFM nicecream18 crushed the top seed NM fpawn in round 2. Although black blundered a piece at the end, his position was already miserable.

On top board in round 3, Mossyhorn survived an unpleasant endgame against nicecream18 and eventually won on time. Alas, the top seed quickly took care of business in round 4. 

Five players shared the lead heading into the final round: fpawn, Mossyhorn, nicecream18, J3Chess24 and nvisel. The first two both won without much adventure, leaving nicecream18 and J3Chess24 to battle for a share of top honors. Both players had chances in a wild game that neither could win.

I certainly intend to run more of these online tournaments and hope for an even greater turnout. Is Saturday at 3:00 PM a good time, or does anyone have another suggestion? Please comment below. I am somewhat flexible on Saturdays and weekday evenings.
