We have a brand new World Chess Champion to celebrate this
weekend at the SIlverdale Chess Club.
In a dramatic turn of events at the chess world's highest level of competition, 18-year old Indian Grandmaster Dommaraju Gukesh, (also known as Gukesh, also known as Gukesh D), captured the World Chess Championship in Singapore on Thursday by winning the last game of his match against the reigning champion, GM Ding Liren of China.
In so doing, Gukesh became the 18th and youngest undisputed world champion in history.

Title holder Ding Loren was able to grab defeat from the jaws of what looked like a certain draw with a spectacular blunder.

There was only one blunder that would allow challenger Gukesh to force the exchange of both the rooks and the bishops on both sides, leaving a King and two pawns for Gukesh against a King and one pawn for Ding.

More importantly, after the exchanges, Gukesh had the “Opposition” meaning his King was on the move and could occupy the force field on the opposing square to the opponent’s King, forcing Ding to retreat.

In case you missed it, we’ll take a look at the final combination and play the YouTube video that shows the world's reaction to the victory as it took place.

We’ll also be making another go at Puzzle Rush online, this time with a mouse instead of a track pad.

Chess X-mas Swap Meet

For the holidays, we’ll also have a few random chess books to trade.  If you would like to trade and have a chess book or two you’re no longer reading, you can add it to  Santa’s cargo and exchange it for another book donated by another club member. You must donate a book to trade it for another book.  Resale value of the books have no affect on the Swap. Swaps available while supples last.

Big Move Announcement

We’ll also have an announcement about a new location for the SIlverdale Chess Club since the Library has informed us they can no longer host the Chess Club weekly (our current schedule of one day a week), and  can only accommodate one day a month, meaning monthly.
We have a couple of great new venues to be evaluated. The final location to be announced next week!
