Dear Silverdale Chess Club Friends and Families,
Ready to try a whole new brand of Chess? 
In honor of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour, taking place February 7-14, we invite you to try your hand, and your brain, at Freestyle Chess, a new format that “levels the playing field” at the chessboard, and is being touted as the future of Chess itself.
What is Freestyle Chess (also called Fischer Random Chess or Chess 960 (for the 960 possible starting positions in the game)?

Here are the rules of Freestyle Chess:
 
Piece placement 

• White pawns are placed on the second rank
• Black pieces are placed opposite White's pieces
• The king is placed between the rooks
• The bishops are placed on opposite-colored squares
• The minor pieces are placed on the first rank for White and the last rank for Black

Castling 

•  Each player can castle once
•  The king and rook must move to the same spaces as in standard chess
•  The king cannot move through or into check
•  All squares between the king and the rook must be vacant

Game play 

• The game is played the same as standard chess after setup
•  Games end in checkmate, stalemate, or time-out
 
Regular chess will also be played as always!
 
If interested,. a short course on the Sicilian Defense, from the Najdorf to the Dragon, will also be offered.
