İsmet İnönü started playing chess at a young age and was an accomplished player. Prof. Dr. Sami Büyükgökçesu, one of the former players of the Turkish National Chess Team, was one of the people who personally witnessed this unknown characteristic of İsmet İnönü.

The incident took place in 1972, during the "chess match of the century" between the two great masters of the world, Bobby Fischer of the USA and Boris Spassky of Russia. The whole world was watching the match, which at the time was perceived as a reflection of the power struggle between Russia and the United States. Fischer loses the first two games almost suicidally. But then he manages to bring the situation to 4-2 with 4 brilliant wins in a row.

One of those who watched the match day by day, like the whole world, was İsmet İnönü, who was staying in Maltepe, Istanbul at the time. However, İnönü could not understand Spassky's abandonment in one game and asked them to find a master chess player to explain it. The task fell to Büyükgökçesu, who was only 21 at the time. Let us listen to his admiration for İsmet Pasha's insightfulness:

"When the Russian player left, there was really no reason to abandon the game. Even many chess players who call themselves 'masters' would have easily continued with that party, and certainly would not have left the game. Top players sometimes leave a party because they see the end of the game. In fact, the Russian player saw that he was going to lose and left the game. But it was not an easy position to see.

The Pasha saw that. That's what surprised me the most. I played the game for Pasha from the beginning to the end. In the position where Spassky abandoned the game, Pasha, instead of the American chess player, said, 'That's why he abandoned the game' in a five-move variant."
